View Full Version : Is my HX520 strong enough for overclocking?

This is my rig:
Q6600, IP-35(regular), Q6600, 2 gigbyte of OCZ platinum rev 2(ddr 800),various hard disks+ DVDRW, Corsair HX520, a water cooling system with 6 large 120 MM sanyodenki fans.
Had no problem setting system up what so ever.

But I am not sure the HX520 is up to the task when overclocking.
I have a stable overclock for 24\7 at 3.6GHZ with 1.4225 volts for CPU in the bios.
Abit EQ shows the +12v ATX at 11.97...but this does drop underload (small FFTS on 4 cores using prime 95) to 11.91..I know this is in spec but this drop does not occur when overclocking less, and this also occures more frequently when overclocking higher than 3.6.
Do you think the 520HX with 480watts on the 12V rail isn't enough? if it is then why do I get the lower reading for the +12v atx in abit EQ the more I overclock?

I would like to mention that I am using a really weak graphic card atm...an Albatron 6600GT - I am going to change it soon...but i am worried that my PSU will not be able to hold this overclock + a higher power consuming graphic card (only planning on 1 graphic card no crossfire).

I would personally say you are safe with something like 8800GTS. The Corsair HX520 is one heck of a PSU.

Q6600 at 3.6 is pretty good... it could be CPU leakage trying to push it further hence your slightly lower 12v rail... an HX520 should be fine for ANY single card setup... even with all of your big fans... provided you don't do like 8 HD's and 4 burners. Just how many hard drives are you running anyway?

It'll handle it fine. :)

I'm using a 520 with a dual core and a GTS (both heavily overclocked) and it works great. The efficiencies of the unit are so good they help keep it cool in here.

Don't quite trust the MB voltage monitor. In my DFI P965 my HX620 12V+ reads with only 11.71v, but using a multi-meter its a little over 12v. :D Not a very precise reading though coz the multi-meter was an analog one. :D

Corsair PSU's ROCK!

this PSU pushes my oc-ed rig without a sweat, has so much contionus power that i feel when i put Phenom it will feel the same

HX520 in my Q6600 rig at 3600..ATI 2600, just a single 80 gig sata.
Shows 11.98v on the +12 in bios and machine is at 100% load 24/7 with no issues..

I have a Q6600 at 3600 as well, but I also have a 8800GTS OCed. The rig is WCG stable. :D

WELL DONE CORSAIR on ALL of their PSU lines... The VX is incredible with even better efficiency, stability, output etc. You only have to give up modular cables but then again you get a VX550 with 41a on 12v rail for $86.90 shipped free and with a $15 MIR. This was up from $83.90 and $20 MIR. Just an incredible bargain.

520W with Q6600 at 3.6 stable here too, with a 8800GTS 640 @ 648/1500/2000

I can get it stable at 3.81, but I run into thermal problems doing intensive tasks.

Hell yeah. That power supply is powerful.

i agree

how about a 620W PSU letting me overclock a quad core at 5150MHz benching 3D with heavily overclocked 8800GT and 12V rail sitting at 12.01v

link in the sig :)

sick sick sick :D

dont forget that its silent... i mean silent as in you have to look at it to check if the fan is working. (ok, i admit, i dont load it heavily since its in my weak secondary rig but still).

impressive how corsair went from nothing to absolute top notch in the psu market.
