View Full Version : MOSFET Block on MSI P6N

I have an MSI P6N SLI FI with exposed mosfets next to the cpu. I put a fan on top of them, but I'm going to get a q6600 soon and want to overclock that and I'm worried about the mosfets temperature. Should I water cool them? Is there a block that works on this board? Thanks

Just get some of those Swiftech or Enzotech GPU RAM stick-on heatsinks.

I'm looking for this block as well. Do we need to develop one, or is it standard spacing from another company?

Water cooling mosfets is more of a novelty than any sort of need. The main reason is that they are designed to operate up to 125C, so air cooling is generally more than adequate.

I will end up making some mosfet blocks for my 680i, but I'll be running it in a chipset/mosfet only loop where heat dump doesn't matter. You could also add them into a GPU only loop, but I wouldn't make a CPU suffer by dumping mosfet heat into a CPU loop.

Not sure who makes blocks for those, check out EK, they have a bunch.

I'd just like to add that you can't mount water blocks for the mosfets unless there are holes in the motherboard from some previous mosfet cooling solution, like the stock one.

P6n has a standard mosfet cooling setup, with holes.

BTW, I can post a pic of why you need mosfet cooling, and it's no "I saw it somewhere", this is MY old board...

Thermalright makes some nice heatsyncs, not sure if they will work for your board but they have a nice mb list for compatibility. thermalright.com

There ya go. Intel 945 Bonanza board, watercooled P-D 820 with BSEL mod. Still runs, but have no faith in it. Melted the neoprene too...

P6N is to run said chip, until the Q9450 comes out. Then it's getting dumped in some customer build...

Wow, melted the neoprene... thanks for the pics!

Wow, that sucker got warm...

Maybe I should start milling those 680i mosfet blocks sooner than I thought...:ROTF:

Yup, most of them operate at high temperatures, but are cooled by CPU fans. If the stock heatsinks are removed (bad) or do not have enough airflow, the heat will seep through the board and into other components.

Takes about three weeks for the R50 lettering to be cooked off the 680i ref boards.
Have been paying close attention to cooling that area of mine since day #1.

FYI, the EK 680i ref block fits the P6N, but leaves 2 exposed. I smell opportunity Martin, if you were to make it I'd buy. Actually, I think after work I'm gonna PM you something, let you take a look at it and tell me what you think...

Ok, maybe you can help with the design. I just did some for CD on his p5k delux, but that board has tons of space compared to the 680i.

I figured the back row is going to have to be stepped similar to the Ek version and I also want to cool the thin top row by overhanging the top of the board. Not sure what's on the back of the board, but I want some sort of backplate/heat spreader.

Nothing like the fresh smell of cut lexan becoming P5k mosfet goodness...:D

If you're using google sketchup, that's cool because that's what I've been using for planning.

You read my mind. I wanted custom blocks anyway, and I think we can help each other out just fine.

Yes, I use SU, as well as Kerkythea for high-res renders. You should have PM shortly (let me finish eating...)
