Or for a smaller camera, one of the Canon IXUS range :)

Make sure you budget for a large SD card too, they don't come with a decent size card in the box....

Cheers :D

For ultra compact I would recommend a Fuji F-series any day over Canon.

Yeah it's great but he's talking aussie dollars so you're way over budget. I just tried to buy 2nd hand for 340. Bugger wouldn't post and it sold for pickup in 3 hours of listing. Here in Oz the S3 is around $550 depending on the lense.

The S3 only has one lens - it is not an SLR so it is not removable.

I missed the AUD part...:(

SLR has become synonymous with interchangeable lenses but all it really means is that view and exposure are through the one lense. I still own a TLR that happens to have interchangeable lenses, as a collector's piece.

I was simply stating it wasn't an SLR camera because you said the price depends on the lens ;)

Oh, I get you. Actually it's the converters for it's lense and whether they are in the pack or not.

Fuji F-31d besides the G9 is the best non slr camera in terms of image quality/iso quality.
They are now very hard to find these since most amateur photographers bought them out due to them being discontinued

[sigh] canon g7? did you even look at the price guideline the guy put up?

g9=overbloated point and shoot. with the loss of the tilt and swivel screen, and a jump to 12mp, doesn't anyone wonder why it look canon years to bump the 40d to 10mp? 20d= 8 mp, 30d= 8mp, 40d= 10mp.

too many pixels, too small a sensor.

but i agree with some, the s3 is nicer than the s5, but i again, out of the price range.

I owned a canon s2-IS for over a year, fantastic camera. Easily had the most control of any non-slr at the time.

Canon IS series is still my pick, you can adjust virtually everything to get great shots. It's a bit large but still small compared to an SLR. To me control is everything, it's really handy when taking shots in unusual situations to be able to adjust everything. If you're not into fussing with settings they have a great auto mode as well.

S3-is can be had for around $250 USD, not sure how the prices are in AUS but as far as exchange rates go this looks to be pretty close.

Before you buy ANY camera, go use it at a store. It can have all the stats in the world but if it doesn't feel right in your hands you'll hate it.

I have smaller hands and the Canon S series feels perfect for me. It has enough weight to feel like you really have a solid product that won't fall apart in your hands, yet its not heavy enough to be a burden with a neck strap.

Look up a used model.

Or, look up the differences between the S2 and S3. If the S2 fits your needs go for it.
