For me, Episode 1 was a semi let down. It was a lot of the same stuff over and over again but I did like the improvement in graphics as well as HDR. I really liked the lighting effects at the very beginning on Dog and Alyx as well as the cool looking falling ash.

I've been reading some reviews of Episode 2 as I'm waiting for the game to finish downloading from Steam (a nice 1.1mb/s i might add) and it seems this game is rated much better than Episode 1. So my hopes are high and i should be able to start playing in about 30min.

Same as Andrew LB, same old repetition of dull puzzles and use of the gravity gun in the same old way. The EP2 development team seem to realise that people like to use guns and exploding things to kill people. I've finished EP2 now, its much much better, took me aroudn 7 hours to complete and the endings pretty cool!

started ep 2 ...nice scenery as usual.
1600x1200 4x 8x very nice....i suppose i should be over hl2 by now...but the fact i can get good frames at high settings with cheap g card ...i think valve's coding guys do a good job.

So far I'm really digging the game. Much better thus far compared to Episode 1. Less linear outdoor areas, beautiful scenery in the forests, and outstanding lighting and rendering of the characters. I've put about 2 hours into it thus far and am very happy. I can't wait to see how things turn out!

I use "force alternate frame rendering 1" which seems to give the best FPS in this game and others like Oblivion. I'm also running at 1920x1200 with everything maxed out. HDR, 16x anti-aliasing, 16x Anisotropic Filtering, etc.

Thanks for the help Bro! I was using the beta 163.71 drivers and just upgraded to the beta 163.75 drivers and all is well. Like you I was running every thing maxed out at 10*333 and got really good frame rates (100+) at 19x12.

Game play is nice and I like the twist...i.e., continuation from Episode One.

I'm currently using nVidia's v163.69 and they're working great for me. I'm going to install v163.75 beta tomorrow because it specifically says in the notes that it fixes problems with HL2 Episode 2.

I do find it odd that in the .pdf on their site which talks more in depth about the beta 163.75 driver, it mentions that there is still a problem with running Anti-Aliasing with SLI on the 8800 series cards. I'm going to install the driver anyways and see if I lose my 16xAA that i'm running. I'm pretty sure it will be hard to notice since i'm running 1920x1200 w/16xAF on. :)

you reboot your system? Your virtual memory and convention RAM may have an issue with it.

1. Completely exit Steam (even your sys tray icon)
2. Find, delete or remove your ClientRegistry.blob
3. Start up Steam again and try your download again

If this causes any problems put your ClientRegistry.blob back where you found it. However, by deleting it and starting up Steam makes Steam download a new ClientRegistry.blob - just an fyi - this action usually fixes 90% of any Steam related problems.

1. Maybe because I'm a very casual HL player I'm confused as hell. What exactly is going on?
2. Who is the G-Man and what is his purpose?
3. Why are all my Black Mesa co-workers old and I'm young? More importantly, why does no one question this in the game?
4. The 7 day war what was it?

I liked the episode it was longer than EP1. I do hope for the sake of gamers that episodic gameplay is coming to an end. For the development time and content delivered it isn't worth it.

1. hl2 takes place years after black mesa and DR brain (orsoemthing similar spelling) is in charge of a combine (alien) controlled city called city 17. all the residents are basically slaves or wat not. freeman with the other doctor he worked with in blackmesa work together to free everybody and eventrually lead a rebellion.

ep1 is just what happens after the rebellion and you are trying to get out of the city before the tower blows up.

2. G-Man is sort of like the messanger of God. He tell you what to do and appears randomly.

1. Events of HL: G-man indicrectly sends you and a crystal into an anti-mass spectrometer test chamber where the crystal screws up BM and opens lots of portals between xen and earth. Xen aliens (headcrabs, vortigaunts) infest earth. Freeman kicks some major xen ass, gets thrown around Xen and BM and finally gets caught by the G-Man. Then, assumably, the Combine notice xen and earth still fighting, they join in and pwn them both.

3. There's been a 20 year gap between the Black Mesa incident, and Freeman's appearance in City 17. Freeman was kept in stasis by the G-Man (a very mysterious figure, noone knows much about him yet, even though he as been in HL from the whole beginning), while the combine through series of portal storms invaded and overtook earth. Freeman is released from stasis by the G-Man, and kicks combine ass.
That's why Gordon is so young. Eli throws in a remark in HL2 "Gordon! Let me look at you, man.. My god, you haven't changed a bit!" too.

Another question about the G-Man. Why was he surrounded by the Vortigons (sp) at the end of EP1? Is he real or what's the damn deal.

I started to replay with the commentary on and they said they changed up the beginning train sequence late in development. Maybe that was originally how you came out of the train wreck and found her.

2. G-Man is actually more of a mystery considering many of the comments he has made during the game such as talking about his clients interests among other things.

3. Yeah. Freeman was a very new scientist to black mesa when the first half life began and all the senior scientists there were older. Plus, when G-Man removed Freeman from the world and put him into the void after his little trip to the Vortogaunt's home world.... he was put in stasis. It's why Dr. Vance commented on how Freeman "you haven't aged a bit" or something like that.

4. The 7 days war was what happened due to a by-product of Freeman launching that missile in the original half life where it allowed combine controlled vortogaunts to enter through the portal storms. After you leave the game at the end and are put into Stasis by G-Man..... many years (i think 7 years) pass and during that time the Combine sent in their own super high tech weaponry to exploit earths resources, conquer its people and add various advanced aspects of the human race to their own. Hence their name "combine".

ok, i just finished the game and i have some very interesting things to talk about. first of all...CLIFF HANGAR MUCH!! jesus, how did they end like that, im sitting there pooping my pants and then bam, black screen...DAMMIT.

Second, if you have a chance, go to the bridge scene, instead of listening to alex :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana: about whatever, go to the ledge and look towards the bridge. G-MAN IS WALKING ON THE BRIDGE...RIGHT THERE!!!! he just walks towards the end of the bridge and vanished behind the corner. spooky as all hell, theres no explanation for this at all. (i'll try to get screenies)

besides that rant:
Episode 2 was way better then episode 1. It stil was a bit on the short side but its worth it tbh. Episode 1 didnt add much to the storyline of Half Life 2, Episode 2 however did add alot to the story of half Life 2.

This game to the contrary of Episode 1 is actualy wortht he money, its longer, adds more to the storyline and was actualy chalanging at times.

Portal kicked as tbh. I liked Episode 2 but Portal was better.
A few of the missions actualy had me puzled for a few minuts and i actualy had to think to solve them. Besides that there is also a storyline going on and Portal most likely ties into Episode 3 (in a small way).
The Computer AI has some great dialogue going on.

yar :P and the slides in Portal that showed the competition between them and Black Mesa also gave it away.
But i said most likely cause i dont know in wich way it will tie into Epi3.

Mostly cause i have no idea when Portal is happening.

In Episode 3 youl likely find the Portal gun it could be that finding this gun and the fact that the ship is owned (and developed) by Aperture is the only tie in.
But it could also be that the tie in is way bigger.

The portal gun could b kick ass in half Life.
make 1 portal at a cliff and then create a new portal under every enemy you see.

Well, the game is simply amazing. Even more - The ending is just... i dunno even what to say, really dramatic.
The gameplay is exciting, storyline - fantastic, and the graphics - great.
In some aspects, i'd say that ep2 is better even that Half-Life 2 itself. )

Second, if you have a chance, go to the bridge scene, instead of listening to alex :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana: about whatever, go to the ledge and look towards the bridge. G-MAN IS WALKING ON THE BRIDGE...RIGHT THERE!!!! he just walks towards the end of the bridge and vanished behind the corner. spooky as all hell, theres no explanation for this at all. (i'll try to get screenies)

1. At the dam before you get to black mesa west.

I did a quick google on the vortigaunt (cause im 100% shure its the guy from Star trek).
it seems Louis Gosset Jr did do the main vortigaunt voice in Episode 1 (i didnt even notice tbh) but in Episode 2 the main vortigaunt voice was done by Tony Todd who played the voice of Kurn in Star Trek.

Dunno why IMDB lists Gosset as doing the voice.

I just played through Episode 2 a second time, but used the option of listening to the developers talk about the making of the game and it was really cool. It's awesome how much they've improved the graphics of the series yet kept them all similar enough that they seem like one long game.
