gOOD QUESTION, since its watercooled it couldnt possibly be overheating now. So if it still rings of death then its something else other then overheating

Well if it was a dead HD the Xbox just wouldnt recognize it...
It doesnt need the hard drive for anything but saved stuff, since it is supposed to boot up without the drive anyway....
