View Full Version : the stuff inside thems heatpipes...?

curiosity got the upper hand... took a wire clipper and snipped a heatpipe from my old MB...

it seems that inside is hollow with some copper color substance lines the insides of the tube...

so... anyone knows what's this stuff?

secondly...
my MB 's SB, NB & MOSFETs are connected by these heatpipes, as you see in most boards these days...

i want to put WC'd block on the NB, maybe on the SB... i can find replacement Heatsinks for them but i cannot find replacement Heatsink for the PWM/MOSFETs...

so it seems that i can remove the heatpipe from the heatsink but in worst case, can i just snip it and solder it closed and use the original sink?

thanks.

Normally I see people just put standard passive heatsinks on the PWM.

thanks Pak,

my problem is that i dont think regular heatsinks will fit, unless i buy one of thems micro sinks with adhesives.

i am thinking of removing the heatpipe and re-installing the original sink...

OT: you play warcrack too? what server? race? class?

I think the heatpipes are a vacuum with powdered bits of copper inside.

Not sure what you mean by the other stuff...

Well, whatever the "substance" is, I don't think it's very effective :p:

It evaporated.
You should be able to snip them off and rely on the remaining finned heat sink for your mosfet cooling. Might want a fan positioned though.

They fills em up with Jager . . .taste it and you will see ;)

I have seen micro sinks used with the thermal tape. Id link you, but I just searched and couldn't find it.

Heatpipes normally have distilled water, or some alcohol, or in the case of vapochill micro R134a.

the copper stuff you described is called wick or something. It is there to cause the fluid to run back to the heat source where it can evaporate again

The wick uses capillary attraction. It's there so the board orientation doesn't prevent the process whether vertical, horizontal or inverted (ala Lian Li).

Kinghong1970 you can use a pipe cleaner as your wick and alcohol, just stuff pipe cleaner in whole lenght an fill with 1/3 volume of the tube with alcohol using a syringe and squease end shut then solder with soldering iron note tube in verticle position with alcohol on bottom

i think i may actually do that... instead of trying to remove the heatpipe, i just snip it 1/4" from the PWM heatsink and close it.

thanks for the inputs.

Wouldnt it have to be vacuumed after puttin the alcohol in? or vacuumed, then alcohol put in. so it evaporates easier

I don't think that is going to help :shakes:
