hi
long time reader first time poster =)
i was wandering if a x2 4200+ 2.2ghz would be a reasonable upgrade from a fx 2.6ghz... the 400mhz deficit would most likely be clocked away =)
or should i go for a opteron 165 and hope to reach the same frequency?

current specs
cpu: fx-55 2.6ghz
mb : asus a8n-sli premium
ram: corsair xms twinx2048-3200c2
gfx : ati x580xt pe (soon to be replaced by a 8800gtx)

the systems is air cooled by a CNPS7000 (iirc) and has "ok" airflow

opteron 165 and above is the obvious and only choise

edit: and a heatpipe based cooler wouldn't hurt

Yeah, I would go for the opty. But if you do, definatly get a better cooler, as the current steppings coming out seem to run quite hot, but clock pretty high.

You can get there w/ an Opty dual. Or one of the higher end X2's. They come w/ a nice lil heatpipe. The lesser X2's don't have the heatpipe.

Much better than single core. Hope you find something cheap. Hard to find deals these days.

Chances are you'll need to buy used for both any X2's or dual opty's nowadays, so you might as well get the 165 (the cache doesn't really help games, but multimedia), and a good stepping to boot (check one of the AMD stickies for which ones to look for)
