I just bought one this evening and I say I love this machine. Apple has to make the best products out there on the market in my opinion. Call me a fanboy or what ever you want. The proof is in the product.

Right now I am doing some testing.
I picked up the the following model:
20" Display
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz 4MB
1GB RAM (Added a secong 1GB) 2GB Total
320GB HDD
ATI HD 2600Pro 256MB DDR3

This machine is very snappy over my MacBook I own that is for sure. Even in windows right now (That I installed for testing of Valve games) it runs smooth and is very snappy.

The thing I love most about this is the new keyboard. The new keyboard has an amazing feel to it. I can't get over how smooth it feels to type on it. It makes me want to type all night long.

I'm assuming with the ATI card and the CPU backing it, it should run Day of Defeat: Source and Half-Life 2 just fine. I am installing them right now over net so it is taking some time to do. I will report back after my results just in case someone is interested in knowing.

Ok so I finally ran DoD:S and it worked great. Settings all maxed out and it ran around 60-70FPS. I am very pleased with this machine.

Oh man, I went to the iStore (what I call it :p: ) to play with these....I love the look and they're just great. So are the keyboards for sure!

Decent prices too (my dad almost got a loaded 24" for like $1600 after my student discount). He also just LOVED the built-in iSight, and I was surprised how good quality was compared to my C2D MBP's.

Anyway, yeah....enjoy it, I'm envious :D

I think the new iMacs are uber sexy. I would of bought one in a heartbeat *if* they had a DVI input so I could use the screen for my PC. But I had to settle on a Mini :(

As far as I know that is incorrect. Do you have some proof?

I discovered in another thread that SwitchResX could be used to identify the panel used in your Mac. The new Aluminum 24" iMacs use a premium LG Philips 24" H-IPS LCD. I ran the SwitchResX test on my WHITE (July 2007 purchased) 24" C2D iMac and found that it too has an expensive LG Philips 24" H-IPS panel!

This was good news since I was under the impression it had an S-PVA panel. I have been very happy with the fidelity of the calibrated display, except I had to use the "Shades" freeware utility to get the brightness down to a reasonable level. It compares very well with my old acrylic 20" ACD (although much brighter...).

Anyway, here's the panel info (sorry for posting in 2 threads, but I thought this was important enough to document for others):
EDID Version........1.3
Manufacturer........APP
Product Code........26012 (659C) (9C65)
Serial Number.......16843xxx

Descriptor #2 is ASCII data:
LM240wu2-sLA (Aluminum 24" is -sLB apparently(

Descriptor #3 is Monitor name:
Color LCD

As far as I know that is incorrect. Do you have some proof? Alot of ppl have gotten one with the early batches.
I walked into bestbuy and I almost dropped 1899$ on the entry level 24inch Imac, but then I realized for the same money I can build a sleek Quad Core system with an 8800 based card and 24 inch LCD. Don't get me wrong its a nice system, but when you see a Quad Core System rip a full DVD in under 8 mins:D You wonder how can you live without.

He wants to be able to use the screen built into the iMac. I wish they would let you do that too.

In aus imac 24" is $2400aud approx.

q6600 $350
corsair 620hx $180
ballistix 2g6400 $200
case - [say $150]
kboard [ms basic] $30
mouse [razer] $80
mobo [p35] $200
24" lcd (good quality Benq FP241W) $1000 !!!
operating system [mac-os is around $200aud]
floppy+dvdr/s - say $100

8800gts 320 - $400

inlcuding graphics card that comes to $2900

$2500
with x1950pro ($200aud)
& $150 dollar cpu (e4400)

$2400 with 2600pro & e4400.....

soo.... the imac24" isnt such a bad deal imo. except 2600pro sux.
however imac24" basic deal only has 1gig so-dimms & apple charge ripoff prices for the extra gig (like 2-300 aud ) 1gig 667 so-dimm costs $65 aud.

The 24" looks retarded (See it in person almost everyday at the student bookstore). I'd have to upgrade my comp table just to use and bring it down as well.

The 20" on the other hand is far better suited for those not sitting a meter away from the computer.

I'd say 500aud more for twice as many CPU cores, a gfx card that's >4x as fast, and faster everything in general is worth it...

You don't need the very best. Also that benq monitor is over rated. Rather get an LG 24inch with the same panel for 499$ USD. Also I might get a 965, or cheaper 130$ P35. Remember There is no O/Cing on an imac, so once O/Ced the little T7700 would be destroyed by a 3.0 GHZ Quad. My sister is going to get the 24inch soon, so I should get a bit more hands on time with it. Only reason is because she likes Final Cut Pro.

N/A in australia.

i s'pose

and you'd be hard pressed to achieve good frame rates with the 2600pro and 1900x1200....i wunda how it will handle dvd video /hd-dvd/blu-ray.
