View Full Version : Help me save my 50z!

Ok, here's my situation:
I'm updating my WC rig which originally had a single AquaXtreme 50z running the loop, so Instead of buying a new pump I decided to get a second 50z to run it in series. While testing it it seemed to run ok. Then during testing a bit of distilled water spilled over the pump :eek:, but it still seemed to be working fine. Then when I set it up on my rig I did the stupid mistake of setting it up with both pumps pulling at each other and I didn't realize it until after I filled it up with water. :brick:

Now what I don't know is what killed, or hopefully lightly damaged the pump. Could it have been the water spill or the pulling effect :shrug: ?
What makes me think it was the water that killed it was that when I opened the pump, I noticed some moisture inside the motor area, and the older 50z (that didn't get water on it) was still intact;
But what makes me think it was the pulling that killed it is that, AFAIK, pure water isn't conductive. Is distilled water impure enough, or ionized enough to conduct electricity :confused:

The other thing is that the older pump was able to circulate the water around and I didn't notice a possible competition between the pumps after turning them on. Could it have died quickly after turning them on while pointing opposite directions, or did the water mess it up internally?

Either way, I have to fix it or it's $80 down the drain! :(
What should I do?

BTW, how do I take out the motor?

Here are some pics:

Sry for being a n00b :p:
1st time running 2x pumps in series, 1st time opening a pump, etc.
At least I'll gain some experience from this, I guess :rolleyes:

You probably damaged it by running it dry. If both pumps were pulling than one of them didn't get water for a bit. Running them for even a couple seconds without water will damage them.
