What do you want to do with Linux? Should it have a full GUI and such?

My favorite place to monitor and try new distros is www.distrowatch.com, check it out and see if you find something that suits you.

If you're new, Ubuntu works well and is simple to install and use. I have been using Linux for 3 days and I already got is all set up dual booting with XP and some really neat desktop stuff going on.
You might want to look into Damn Small Linux (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/).

I use Kubuntu (Ubuntu with KDE Desktop) as opposed to Ubuntu (Gnome Desktop). I found I liked several features of KDE as opposed to Gnome. You can install Ubuntu and then apt -get the kubuntu-desktop to install KDE to see which works best for you.
I find both to boot very fast and the compatibility with my hardware can't be beat.
That said, there are disadvantages such as Sudo as opposed to root access. But I don't personally find that to be a big deal. More experienced users do.
