Hey,

I am after a digital camera for taking pictures (lol) and recording videos. I'm no expert photographer nor do I want to be one, I'm just after something that I will use occasionally.

I was looking at the Sony CyberShot W80 and the Casio EX-S770 which are in my budget of £150 ($250?).

Not sure, can you help me decide on a digi cam please?

Thanks :)

Are you looking at a compact or something with more zoom?

I'm after compact, something small and stylish :)

Get a Canon of the "SD" flavor, depending is you want wide angle, zoom, etc. lens. Get the IS version of any model; like the SD800IS or SD850IS. Don't skimp on cost, even thought they are fairly priced.

I will disagree with the recommendations for the Canon SD (Digital ELPH) series.

I would strongly suggest the Fuji F30/F31.

After reading this review, you will understand why :)

http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/cameraDetail.php?cam=824

But in short:

1. Battery life blows all competition away
2. Image quality
3. High ISO performance - no other compact even competes in this area

I just got my girlfriend the F31fd for her birthday and I will say all the reviews are correct - this is definetely the compact camera to have right now.

X2 on this one,as far as image quality goes it's a class leader :)

...but i think your needs are more in the Canon S3 IS area.

That is the camera I use. I use it quite a bit...I've taken 1000 shots in one day at the Zoo...love it :D

However, I don't think that is what he wants:

Hi guys, well I still haven't brought anything :(

I seem to have lost interest in looking for a compact camera, something with a bit more zoom would be nice :p:

I'll be taking mainly still shots in high light areas but I would like to take pics of moving objects like cars and my dog plus a few in low light... lol!

A Fuji Finepix seems to fit into my budget of under £200/$400 (ish)... S5600, S6500 or S9600. Can I change the lens on these for better image quality and zoom?

Apart from those, I don't really know what would be good

EDIT:

Hi, just saw your post, the Canon looks good and is within my budget but is it better than the Fugi's regarding image quality?

Thanks

If you are considering low light go for the Fuji S6000. The ISO ability it has blows the Canon away.

However in just about every other area...the Canon S3 is a better all-around camera. It has a very fast, sharp lens and IS as well which the Fuji doesn't have.

These cameras are not SLRs so the lens is fixed and cannot be changed. You can though, get lens adapters to use different filters.

Another for the S3. It has a huge Optical Zoom and can use wide angle adapters as well as teleconverters.

Thanks a bunch guys, the zoom on this thing looks awesome :D

Few Q's about the S3 IS:

What memory card can I use... SD?
Is there a max size... 2, 4Gig?
Is there a time limit on continuous video recording and are the video file sizes big?

Appreciate your help :)

1. SD cards
2. Up to 4gb
3. 1gb individual file size limit on video recording. Usually around 8 minutes.

Good choice the S3 turns out some really nice pictures.. The w80 would also have been a good pick. Check out this S3 gallery:

Another vote for the S3, really great camera. 0CM macro and 12x zoom make it all worth it :)
