Is the blue Aqua extreme pump a renamed Laing D4 ?

no,
if you are talking about the blue aquaxtremne 50-z. It has nothing at all to do with anything Laing.
If anything it has its roots in Iwaki, but not really.

It is the same pump as the famous swiftech MCP600 and is pretty darn quiet if you ask me. Nothing like the original D4's whine.

AquaXtreme 50Z / Swiftech MCP600 is a Panworld pump, not a Laing pump. They're rather good pumps - I have 2 of them. However, even tho they don't have the D4's high pitched whine, they are still noisier than both the D5 and DDC's.

Somebody on IRC just said that the pump gets quieter with age as the bearings
wear in is that true ?

They also said even though the pump is slightly louder than most it has a nicer
pitch , A smooth rolling sound as opposed to a friction sound.

Would you agree. ?

It is more of a wooshing sound than a whine... mine certainly hasn't gotten any quieter in 5 years of use... *shrug* Only use it on the pelt rig... normal rig is just vanilla w/c'd with a stock 9w DDC at the mo.
