Hello (lengthy – I’m sorry) – I am new to Water (liquid) Cooling and have a project I want to do, to get my feet wet. I have purchased some really good parts according to this forum and have read and re-read all of the stickies. (I’ve been lurking for months.) and have ordered the main parts that I need to begin. Before I get slammed for it being over kill I wanted to get parts that would be able to grow with me, meaning that I can reuse them for bigger projects once I feel comfortable.
Parts:
1ea PA 120.3 Thermochill Radiator (with proper 3/8” Extension to G1/4” = Alphacool Eheim 1048 Intake Adaptor at G1/4")
(After Reading all of Marci’s & Owner’s Posts/Tests I’ve never been so excited about owning an inanimate object. I would gold plate it if I could. :) I will boil distilled water and Flush thoroughly before use.
2ea DangerDen 1/2 High flow Barbs
2ea DangerDen 3/8 High flow Barbs
1ea Iwaki RD30 Pump ( I do not know the inlet and outlet of this pump – Just got it yesterday – HOLY FREAKING COW is it huge.
All the pics on the forum I just took for granted as Macro setting on a camera and that it was relatively small…. NOPE – HUGE, scary for me.) I will run at 12v or 18v (have to order a Meanwell still)
6ea LateYoon 120mm Fans (high speed) 3 for Push on one side flush and 3 for pull on other flush.
12ft PrimoFlex Tubing 3/8 ID x 1/2 OD – Red
12ft PrimoFlex Tubing 1/2 ID x 3/4 OD – Red
2ea Swiftech 500 Coolsleeves (anti-kinking) – Clear
12ft Tygon Anti-Kink 3/8" ID (1/2" OD) Tubing
1ea Swiftech MCRES-MICRO Small Form Factor / High-Flow Reservoir (1/2" ID & 3/8" ID barbs)
2ea Innovatek Protect 1 Liter Non-Conductive Water Cooling Fluid - Ready to Use (500473)

OK – now here are some of my questions…. :)

What size are the inlet and outlet barbs on the RD30? (I cant tell by looking.)

Can I use 1/2" ID hose from the Pump (output) of the RD30 to 1/2" Barb to the PA120.3 then leave the PA 120.3 on a 3/8” barb and 3/8” tubing to my water blocks (cpu & gpu) to my Micro Res, then 1/2" tubing back to inlet of the RD30?

My layout plan:
RD30 out (1/2” Tubing) to 1/2" inlet PA 120.3 outlet (3/8” Tubing) to CPU & GPU blocks (3/8” Tubing) to Reservoir (1/2” Tubing ) from Res back to the pump for repeat. (Entire loop I am approximating at 8ft (2.43m) to 10ft max (3.04m)

I know it will probably mess with flow and restrictions with going to from 1/2” to 3/8” (within the PA120.3) but can I do it? And still benefit from water cooling?

*****Note: OK – Now this is the part where you don’t laugh…… and remember – I hope to transfer the pump, radiator, and res to my PC later on down the road or buy them again if this stays working successfully.

I am planning on cooling my console. XBOX 360 – Believe it or not it is a 3 core CPU and a Blazing hot as hell ATI graphics chip. So my blocks are limited to 3/8” barbs no matter what I do, because of space. I do not want to use the EXOS system (aluminum) that is on the market….. I am truly looking forward to this as a spring board into water cooling for my PC. I plan on making my own custom External Setup similar to the one by Newls and Fatboy. (My inspiration) but for my console first…. Then move it over later on to my PC. (I just built it 3 months ago and am running a chilltec ultra – OC E6600 to 3.4 at 29*C idle) But my 8800GTX is 50* C idle…. O_o
Anyway – I know the principle of what I am doing is the same for a PC, and would rather loose a $300 console instead of my $2500 PC. :) I hope you understand. And yes I am aware that my cost for cooling is GREATER than the Console itself… I like to mod. :) It’s an expensive habit (not hobby). lol

Oh and by the way – I love the forum and all of your patience, that I see you show everyone on a daily basis. I can not tell you the amount of threads that I see most of you answering the same questions day in and day out for all of us new guys, all with a smile. I assure you that I have searched for most of my questions on the forum, but from reading have never got a confident feeling of “Yes – what I am doing is fine.” Again – thanks for everyone’s hard work in here and taking the time to write guides, do comparison tests, and guide us new guys!

PS – please feel free to correct any of my parts if you see fit… I have truly ordered everything and have 3/4 delivered all ready! I will send back anything if there is better….. The liquid was my only concern – as I do not know about the quality of Distilled water if there is one vendor over another, and with all of the posts on Algae, Funk, Scum, & Bacteria - it has me SCARED TO DEATH…. PT NUKE (no PT Nuke) Zerex (no Zerex) Primo fluid (no Primofluid) Distilled with Iodine or ???? ARHGHGHGHG can’t decide – so I just picked the most expensive (clear with no dye) that I can find…. I will filter all water as I am filling….
D4mn still typing…sorry. H4v3 joo H3LP3D @ n00b 2D4y?

Dang - No love? Not even just a Little? :( Opinions - Hate it? - Like it?

Here are some pics of my progress so far! I really need the Radiator question Answered for 1 inlet of 1/2" Barb and 1 outlet of 3/8" Barb.....

No Worries about the Exos - I am going to use it on another experiment with the Innovatek X-matic waterblock (All Aluminum) This way there will be not metal difference.

Case: You will be able to see green and blue on the interior of the case as I painted it like snake skin with Metallic Blue Specs over a Neon Green Base! It looked ok - but it didn't fit my cut out. Oh and as for the ones that say you should've sanded more or filed more.... shiat 2 weeks of about an 1hr per day..... and it was frustrating the hell outta me. I am happy with the cuts and invested as much time as I could without going completely insane by it. It was inspired by a Tribal Tatoo
For the Paint - I have 4 coats of High build Sandable Primer 1 full can and a half of Red MetalSpec - all sanded with 600grit in between and 1500 on the last coat... then 1 full can of clear. With 1500 to 2000 between each coat. (ALL SANDING WET SANDED with 2 tbs of Dish Detergent as a buffer) Then 4 coats of Liquid Glass Sealant - baked each in the sun.
Total Paint time about 4 weekends - and 2 weeks dry time before last 2000 sand, buff and waxed!
I can put a ruler to the case and the visual Depth is incredibly deep - the pics dont do it justice.... that's how it always is though, huh

They are big - as 1024 x 768 made them look too grainy.... Save them to a folder on your Desktop and then view them and they should fit full screen and look apropriate... then you can delete.

This Pump weighs about 6 to 7 lbs it feels like and the Radiator... a THERMOLCHILL - there are none better. OVERKILL? Oh yes...... Oh yes......

This is a good close up of the Custom Copper Block that covers both CPU and GPU with Acrylic top and the Koolance Block - Just look at the Surface area to release heat! Big Difference!

you can fit 1/2 tubing over the barbs on a RD30. Changing to 3/8 will effect your flow slightly but to cool the 360 it shouldnt real matter. Obviously when you get to do your pc stick to 1/2 barbs.
I have a 120.1 rad with 1 120mm fan cooling my 360. Still gets hot thou.
Also as you said this is big time overkill for the 360 but can understand your reasons.
Have fun and good luck ;) :welcome:

Thanks Jabski oh and to clarify - I should be ok sticking a 1/2" Barb on one side of the Radiator and a 3/8" on the other?

Thanks for all of your help! I was starving for some info! :D

OK - A little update! :)

I give all credit to my inspiration to Newls1 and Babalouj !

So here is where I am at so far: Still have a lot of cleanup of wiring and have not put in the UV Cathodes yet. I am going to change the front fans to Blue LED Thermaltake A2015 (adjustable speed) I still need some help for a couple of things - I do not know how to really secure the tubes coming in and out of the box good? Any ideas would be appreciated. Also was crystal clear, ran for 4 hours then drained, then did it again then I added the 1 drop of PTNuke and then a splash of G11 Pentosin then it started foaming( just a little froth)? Ran a whole lot quieter too after adding it. I am assuming it lubricated something in the pump. Anyway - is the white foam bubbles normal after adding the UVblue G11?
Also in your NooB friendly BLEED guide! I wish it would be added to please CAP your swiftec microres before shutting down the pump! It backed BURPED all over me.... (not to mention scared the hell outta me) Live and learn I guess!
I sound proofed it with some case sound barrier from Performance PC's..... awesome stuff and running the pump at the lowest voltage possible by the Meanwell... any one know what that is by the way?

Here are some pics!

I'll update more as I get more done!

The box was red - I painted it gloss black and was not happy - So I painted the outside again - Metal Spec Blue then Sponged Black gloss with 3 coats of clear.... I could not get everthing in there without scratching it ofcourse here and there!

Any - thanks for any and all feedback!

Just clarify this real quick for me, why the different types of tubing, primoflex and tygon?

Just clarify this real quick for me, why the different types of tubing, primoflex and tygon?

I couldn't decide so I bought both - The primo was way more flexible so I went with it!
And THANK YOU for posting! :welcome:

:D

The one thing I do not like with Primoflex is the 3/8" is thinwall.... but with the Coils on it it helps ALOT!

Thanks again!

OK I see.

I know the RD30 is one strong pump, and some people have recommended using 5/8" ID tubing for the inlet (though not all do), I'm wondering if 3/8" will be too small for the sheer amount of power of the pump. Others would be more knowledgeable about that though, I've never used one of those pumps (can't afford it!).

Then again, maybe with the pump undervolted it would probably be OK.

i think i have the answer to your "why is this thread so dull" question. LEARN TO USE IMG tag! it's much more appealing to the average cruiser.

Thanks pwnage101 - I will go back tomorrow and do it... I know how I just didn't want the post to be huge - I will resize to 800x600 :)
Thanks for the input!
