I would go with the Seagate. They generally are higher quality drives, and are some of, if not the quietest drives on the market. Go with Seagate.

Yeah, Seagate drives are quite and reliable but slower than even some PATA drives.
Go to Storage Review comparison page (http://www.storagereview.com/comparison.html), browse through the benchmarks and see for yourself.

Seagate if you want silence, WD if you want speed.

duno about these noise comments cos i literally cannot hear my 80gb SE WD without opened the case and putting my ear to within about 5 inches of it.

every fan in my case makes more noise, including the low cfm quiet evercool ones.

at 45dBA, i can think of quite a few case fans that are quieter than a WD800JB. the Cuda IV and V drives are great for silent PCs.

yes and thats also 45dba measured very differently from a fans dba. on top of that, case fans are louder anyway because of 1: air turbulence and 2: they are on the outside of the case most of the time and so are easily heard. hdd are inside the case which lowers the noise greatly for a start.

stick a sound meter half inch away from a hdd you might get 45dba. stick a sound meter somewhere outside the case, youll get whatever dba your fans are outputting because it wont be able to hear the hdd.

Problem with Seagate... recent offerings seem to have some performance problems with raid 0. (not necessarily SATA version but ide ones)... if the trend continues... you know where to look into...

Also Seagate drives no longer feature AutoAcoustic Management, so they aren't anywhere near as quiet as they used to be... (they had to remove the technology due to some patent issue apparently)

well, i can't hear my 60GB Cuda IV over my fans, but when i had a WD600BB installed, i could hear it over the fans. i guess it just depends on how loud your fans are.

jinu117, the Cuda IV drives had problems with RAID 0. the new Cuda Vs supposedly had this problem fixed. i don't know about the new(or soon to be released?) 7200.7 drives.

also it's too bad about the AAM, although i can't hear a difference on my drive, it makes a difference on the newer ones.
