I'll start with my systems specs:

6700 ES step 4 @ 3.5ghz with scythe infinity
2gb corsair PC 6400
EVGA 8800gtx
enermax galaxy 1000watt
3x 74gig raptors in raid 0.
ASUS P5W dh Deluxe.

Ok the thing is that I want to upgrade to dual 8800s and a 24inch screen to run 19*12 res. Since there are no hacked drivers to allow 8800 sli on crossfire mobos that means I need a new mobo... If I need a new mobo I basically need a new cpu because step 4 ES will not work on anything decent nowadays. If I am going to get a new cpu I basically need a quad core because I will be switching to vista soon enough for the dx10 games that are coming up in the months ahead. If I am going to get a quad core I have to wait for yorkfield or phenom as those are coming semi soon and it wouldn't be too smart to get the current ones. When those come out at first there will only be high end models available, which are expensive as hell... If I am going to vista and quad core I'll also have to get 4gigs of mem...

Too many upgrades piled up on me at once and I am not very tempted to spend 3500 at once on my already fast rig lol. Any suggestions at all for a smoother upgrade path?

I say get the 24" LCD and run 1900x1200 with the 8800GTX now and worry about a major overhaul down the road. Give it...6-12 months and some new tech will be ready for you.

Right now you're looking at $2k for a marginal difference.

gtx cant do 19*12 on new games at all :(, thats why I wanted sli in the first place.

P5W = 975x so it should be able to do Crossfire, which mean you need to replace the 8800GTX by a pair of 2900XT but that isn't really good due to the poor performance of them.

I suggest you wait till the games you wanted get released to try before judging the need of upgrades. Also, you can resell most parts to recoup the losses.
