Hello all. Firstly I'like to ask about the quake3 timedemo benchmark. When I run it under Windows98 SE and with detonator 28.32 drivers I get 170+/- fps but when I run it under WindowsXP Professional, using 29.42 detonator drivers, I always get 240+ fps. My Msi Geforce3 Ti200 runs at default speeds and I havent done any tweaks in neither of the OS (98/XP). Anyways, in windows98 and with 3dmark2001SE i get 5300 3dmarks, that is low because i see most of g3 ti200 get 6000+ 3dmarks and with system specs similar to mine. And keeping in mind that under WindowsXP i get more fps i tried to run 3dmark2001se under WindowsXP and i get this error whichi says that my system does not support MMX instructions(!!!!!) and its recommended to upgrade it or test with older version of 3dmark. Any ideas for that problem as well instructions to get higher 3dmark scores are welcomed and if anyone knows why there is 70-80 fps loss when running in windows98? thanks in advance.

Well some of the reason is that (in my opinion) Xp handles games better than 98. 98 is slow overall for gaming and benches. that will accout for some of the FPS drop in 98. Also Win98 uses DX8, Xp comes with DX8.1 which also gives you a bigger performance boost. And they newer Det drivers you used are optimized for a Gf3 and above therefore giving you even more FPS then Before. Add all that up and that is probably why you are seeing a FPS jump.

Also you 3dmark scores is about on track for 1400mhz kt266 chipset. Video Card is not only factor in 3dmark if you have 1400 mhz and i hae 1600 mhz and other than that our systems are EXACTLy the same illget hundreds more points than you.

My system got 5913 marks with a GF2 Pro, 1640 mhz and 183 FSb, and 7935 marks with 1640 mhz 193 fsb and on a Gf3 Ti 200

Also a majority of the GF3 Ti cards such as ours are overclocked, you state in your sig its a default speeds being 175/400 i assume.

I tested mine at 200/500 and 250/500, and my GF2 was 200/400 that i ran at 250/465

Could also be that in Win98 the VIA 4 in 1 drivers were not installed, which if you have a VIA chipset will make a huge difference. WinXP ships with a fairly new set of drivers.

All the 2X.XX Detonators are optimized for GeFORCE 3, but I think that in general, XP is the superior OS for gaming. Also, it has much better memory management than 98.

If you used the xp native drivers for via .they seem to be faster on a close to stock system..your 98 4 in 1 might be outdated also , the guys that are beating you have a tweaked os, O/C graphic card and more than likely a higher FSB...When I ran 98/ME I only had 2 things running when I benched systray+explorer....also XP is a faster stock OS IMO go to madonion and look for info in FAQ about why 3d01se ain't running ...you cannot be only one with that error
