Well, I got my first job during the summer and my dad said I can buy myself something to remember the summer by (rest is going into college savings). My brother already has the WII and the PS3 isn't appealing to me, so that leaves the XBOX 360. Unfortunately, I have read all these threads about returning them because they overheat and such. So, I am just wondering if it is a good idea to purchase an XBOX 360 now? I would prefer not to go through RMA or returning it, so if I should wait a little while I will. What do you guys think?

I would wait until the issues are resolved...

Thanks k0nsl. That is what I was thinking. Anyone else?

I've had 3 since day one and I've only had to replace 1. I bought and paid for the warranty from Gamestop (like an extra $40) and all had to do was walk in, and swap out for another 360 pay for another warranty and I was off. It took like 15 minutes of my time to do and really wasn't that big of a deal. The other 2 360's I have get used daily and have never had any issues. I say go for it and buy one.

1 in 3 is pretty high. I'm still thinking about this whole issue. If it makes any difference, I'm most likely gonna be getting the Elite one or whatever (the one with the HD-DVD player). Thanks for your input and keep it coming guys.

Well considering Microsoft just issued a 3 year warranty from purchase date for the "3 Red Lights" then I would say now is a good time to get one. Even though there are a few returns, there are many more non-returns. Microsoft will ship you a box to send the console back to them for repair if anything happens. All shipping costs are covered.

Go for it, your fail safe with the new warranty they issued. I am quite impressed actually. Microsoft spent over a billion dollars I think for the new warranty terms.

Does that come with the XBOX or would I have to purchase it? If it comes with it, then it might change my whole thinking.

Do you have a car? If you want to buy something to remember your summer, a car will last a lot longer than a game console.

Car, xbox, too wholly different categories :p:. Since it's his first job, if he works full time for the rest of the summer, he'd get maybe $1200 at most.

Yes it comes with it. Nothing you have to purchase. They applied it to any 360 owner up to 3 years after purchase date including new buyers.

That makes things much more appealing now that I know it comes with a warranty from Microsoft. Also, as for the car, I do not own one officially, but am able to borrow my parents if I ever need to (my dad has the company car, which is the only one I can't drive).

The Elite does not come with an HD-DVD player btw.

Are you sure about that? Why else would it have an HDMI out cable unless it played High def? Unless they plan on you downloading them, which would be stupid. Which one comes with an HD-DVD player?

It plays high def games. No Xbox360 comes with an integrated HD-DVD drive, the drive is a $179 peripheral.

None of them come with an HD DVD player. It is a an external attachment that costs a whopping $180. They also just raised the warranty to 3 years for free. I have had my 360 for about 7 months now and have never had a problem with it, so I recommend getting one.

Hmmmmm. Thanks for the info guys. Things are looking up. I might just get the regular one and buy the hd-dvd attachment later.

Yah, the HD-DVD player is great if you have a widescreen LCD or HDTV. I have it and a Panny plasma. Gorgeous stuff. I have Fear and Loathing, Last Samurai, Planet Earth, King Kong which comes with the player itself and 300 is on the way! I'm gonna pick up the Matrix trilogy as well sometime soon.

Of all of those get Planet Earth FOR SURE. I don't know if you have seen this series which is narrated by David Attenborough but it is quite stunning. They used HDDVD cameras and did a document basically on the planet which spans over all continents and took over 5 years to make. This documentary which contains 14 episodes on 5 discs is absolutely breathtaking. They filmed the most remote locations found on our planet and documented footage never seen before. One of my favorite parts is the snow leopards hunting in the Himalaya mountains. Spectacular. This compilation is the pinnacle of HDDVD and BluRay hands down.

I wouldn't wait, even though I'm not denying that there are 360's breaking down, but it's overly hyped IMO. And the price is right, lots of good titles can be picked up for half the price too.

at the moment the 360 is THE console to own, and there's a truckload of awesome games coming out this fall/winter.

I would wait a while, for the "falcon" 65nm chips at least. Maybe there will be a future price drop and game prices will definitely drop over time.

With the 3 year warranty it's not really a bad time to get a 360. I'd be tempted to wait for 65nm, the improved cooling and the quieter DVD drive but since those are all just rumored to come out sometime soon, who knows when it will happen. The only known improvement on the horizon is HDMI on all models.

BTW, the 360 just got a price drop last week the elite is now only $450. They also added and HDMI port to the premium and that is only $380.

^ $350, i'm waiting for the new chips and another price drop because $50 after 2 years is ridiculous.

Imagine any other PCs rate of depreciation. :p:

I belive the elite is one of the "fixed" xbox's out on the shelvs. They now have a 3 year warrenty so if something goes wrong you can alwyas get it fixed. I would get one

No, the elites aren't "fixed" either.

Thats right, the "Elite" still have the same problem. Wait further, I think it will be spread out when the problem is fixed.

Considering I just had another brand new xbox360 die, after less than a month and a half, I really have to advise against buying one presently.

Well, I take back everything I said! My 360 died today, damn you Red Ring of Death. The worst part is that it won't be fixed in time for Halo 3!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

Sucks for you guys, i'd definitely say wait for the Falcon chips:shrug:

I have proof that you should wait as long as possible. Read this article (http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/678721/More_Reliable_360_Coming_This_Fall.html).

So I guess I'll be waiting a little while then lol. Hopefully around Christmas someone will have some good deals.

The board does not include a 65-nanometer version of the ATI graphics chip for the Xbox 360. That version of the graphics chip is coming later. A good question here is why not. Doesn’t Microsoft really need to reduce the heat coming out of that graphics chip?

For the record, it's the graphics chip that's the problem with the 360's, not the cpu. Only the cpu is being die shrunk right now. Due to this, there's still a chance that these new 360's will still suffer the same fate, unless they can manage to move that chip out from under the dvd drive.

get it dude, u get a three year warranty, and if u wait u will be waiting forever, just make sure ur 360 is in well ventilated place.

Well if the rumor about a $400 40GB PS3 is true, i think i'll jump over for the Folding + Blu-ray. Then when i get another job hopefully the 360 will have the new chips and be more reliable (and cost less) :D

3 year warranty, but do you really want to rely on a 3 year warranty on something you pay close to $400(or closer to $500 if you buy an elite) for?

If the OP does decide to get one now, I heavily advise getting an instore replacement warranty. This way, unlike dealing with MS, the only downtime you'll have when it does break is the time it takes you to drive to the store. Ontop of that, your replacement is guaranteed to be brand new.

p.s. I find it funny that the new consoles come with a piece of paper requesting that instead of returning it to the store you bought it from that you RMA it with Microsoft... They want you to RMA a brand new product that you literally just bought.
