I'm considering the above motherboards. Just looking for advice from U guys which one I should go for... I'm leaning towards the Abit board.

Depends on what you wanna. If you wanna solder some VR's on, go w/ the KX7. If you don't wanna, get the Epox. The KX7 will give you more bandwidth and better performance, and drivers are well.... good. Epox, drivers suck, but it's fun playing w/ the Epox I must say.

8k3a+

the only bugger is you have to change bios to change cpu comand decode

and in abit you can change it in the bios

but epox needs no mods ;)

I have the 8k3a+ and will gladly trade someone for a modded KX7. I wanna tinker with this board.

I'm planning on keeping the above mobo for a couple of years and will be using my current 1ghz athlon until there is a better reason to upgrade that... the old t-bird runs fine at 1500+mhz and has posted at 1600mhz on an Iwill KK266+. I don't know if the aforementioned has any bearing....

Personally id go for the cheaper 8k3a then, as it is less $$ and the KX7 is really for a TOP OVERCLOCK IMO, but nonetheless its your choice. But for a mid speed tbird i dont think the KX7 is absolutely needed. I only want one to test this 2200+

For your application I recommend the 8K3A. I think the KX7 is only better for extreme situations...like at the top of the ORB...and would def. require vmods to compete.

I might venture out here and suggest the AT7, then you could have onboard NIC and Sound, and all that good stuff. I bought one yesterday, putting it together tonight. Looks like a killer board :D.

That's OK, I've got a SB Audigy and three NIC cards... I don't really need the onboard junk.

Yes, but the RAID supports up to 8 drives! Eight! It doesn't get much better than that :D.

LBJGH

...well my old A7V circa 2000, supports up to 8 drives as well and the onboard promise controller can be converted to raid with a bios flash... nothing new...

hehe at least no one that i've heard of ever blew a T-bred :(
how'd that happen anyway, sys?

OK, I'm getting closer to making a decision... I'm now strongly leaning towards the EPOX 8K3A+ because it seams it overclocks the FSB as well as the Abit with good ram and has the voltage adjustment above 1.85v without any mods...

The only thing that is a waste is the onboard sound... I have an SB Audigy... I need a firewire connection and the Audigy serves that purpose. Is the onboard sound any good with the Epox Mobo? I only have two speakers + sub.

I use the onboard sound with a 3-speaker system and I think it sounds fine....some don't like it tho :)

He's saying that his RAID supports 8 drives... Plus 4 more, non-raid. Your 8 drives is the total amount supported... :p

LBJGH

yep, 12 instead of 8 devices... I only have four now so 8 is still plenty.

KX7 has better memory timing options, and greater control over the CPU and Memory settings then the 8k3a.

Check the Orb, how many top results do u see with the 8k3a?

Im coming , with an extra 17mhz FSB aggressive settings, and 170mhz over you in the system department alone.

A 315/625 default cooling Ti4200 (Abit of course ;)) with my block will get your lanky azz behind my score :p

Woohoo....bring it! Like I said, I need help w/ these P4's :D

Did ya happen to notice that 2.1GHz AMD/KX7 system under me? hehehe

i was only looking at yours :)

30 minutes to download drivers, im priming my system @ 10x 200 for stability testing, once complete, i'll reboot, install the drivers, and run a dry benchmark.

It does. For some reason (yet to be determined) I am unable to benchmark higher then 205, or 2000mhz :(

07-09-2002, 04:09 AM
well that's 15MHz FSB more than me and 100MHz CPU more than me.....do I gotta clock my card down to prove to ya that yer KX7 ain't all that much diff? :p :p

GPU block is on the way, im drawing up plans for a ram cooler (all chilled water ;)).

And boy oh boy does the memory on this card get warm.

Does your card have hynix 4ns memory? A3 core? Mine does ;)

N8
07-09-2002, 05:41 AM
yep, A3, 4ns.....and the memory doesn't feel too warm to me! Even tho I am getting some artifacting @ 641 in some of the tests. I don't have any ramsinks on yet tho......I have them, just haven't found the time to install them, lol.

I've got a epox, they are rock hard stable they also take pc3500 and the t-bred without any mods. In overclocking many sites recommend it over kx7 but u won't lose with any of them keep in mind though the epox is also cheaper I paid $112 after shipping about 5 months ago for mine. Got a 1600 at 1890 did have it run at 69c at 1995 but that was to hot for my blood but now it's about 54c i'm only using fans no water cooling(hope to get it soon) but then again my friends say my case will fly if i get another fan

Well the money is in the mail. I've ordered the Epox 8K3A+ and a stick of Corsair PC2700 CAS2 256MB. I didn't have many options here in Canada since the overclocking/performance markets sucks for retail. I ended up getting the stuff from www.ncix.com

u got ripped off alot u should have just got it from the US it would have been cheaper

LBJGH
07-14-2002, 08:25 PM
hmm, newegg has it for $93us, which is $150can.

Then you have to add Duty and GST (goods and services tax) so the price is about the same as the Canadian supplier, ie. $177.

Anyway I couldn't find a US supplier with a substantially cheaper price that would ship to Canada.

I hope your corsair pc2700 is good. Both my sticks sucked and got returned the same day. I would exchange those for at least corsair 3000 or samsung pc2700 sticks. My guess is they will barely do 166fsb. If they do, it will be with slow timings.

Well if they don't do 333mhz @ cas2, they will get 'em back... I'm hoping for 166+ mhz out of 'em.
