The low end single G5 is supposed to be priced around $1299

Apple is keeping prices in line with previous models.

Dual XEON cannot compete with the G5, G5 is being made for the desktop and can double as a server for CFM, CFD, distributed processing, folding, or whatever number crunching applicaion that will compile on it. XEON is 32 bit still too, not a fair comparison.

Its not as simple as loading a distro, Jobs has already stated no other OS will run on Apple hardware, and Apple OS is its signature and will not run on other hardware. All the rumors of OS X running on x86 is false. Sure you can make linux look like OS X but it is not the same. Apple hardware is accessed using "Sprockets", the BIOS is already looking for unique OS signature at start from boot devices

AIX versions of the IBM 970 should be available in August as well.

A dual 2GHz Xeon would not even come close to dual 2GHz PPC 64-bit IBM 970's. Apple (and in-turn IBM) have said they will be at 3GHz within the next 12 months, now dual 3Ghz 64-bit PPC's will be smoking! Also with the 64-bit CPU's these things can now handle 8GB DDR400 RAM.

I support macs for sbcYahoo dsl and I learn about the things more and more granted it is all software and networking stuff and no hardware but you know they really arent that bad if you are into graphics and vid editing, and yeah the low end is about 1299. I would buy one just to play :)

I still hate macs...I cant justify paying the price for something that i think has crappy parts and a crappy OS, plus i cant upgrade it...the only thing i like is its gui but hey, i have linux and i have that exact same gui thanks to the smart people who write my pretty desktop themes
