So, I've finally started building. My digital camera just wandered home late yesterday night, so the pictures are partially into the project. Then again, I only missed one thing of any interest before the camera was available.

If there's anything wrong with the way I'm doing this worklog, please tell me, I'll fix it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2274.jpg
My old DiabloTek Demon IV; a forty dollar case that came with a 450W PSU. That power supply claimed the life of my old Dell computer...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2276.jpg
Screw you Gigabyte. That's a 7600GS passive cooled edition; Gigabyte used non-standard mounting holes, meaning my MCW60 won't fit. Buying an X1950Pro later today to replace that.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2277.jpg
MCW60; I'm sure you've all seen that.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2278.jpg
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Rev 3.3; I removed all the heatsinks already.
Crucial Ballistix 2x1GB DDR2 1066 and my Western Digital 80GB.
MCW30 chipset; again, sure you've seen those before.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2279.jpg
Zip ties to tether the radiator into my case; the MCW60 is sitting there to give you an idea of scale.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2280.jpg
Thermochill PA120.3 with D12SM-12's. Screwed them in using a total of twelve 1 1/4" screws, obviously, no shroud involved.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2281.jpg
A picture with the barbs. I washed the radiator out with just shy of boiling distilled water, two rinses. Water was almost completely clean on the first rinses, it didn't need much. The barbs are 3/8" brass fittings, with some Teflon tape so nothing leaks. Dad had them lying around; I just took them and cleaned them up to use on the radiator.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2282.jpg
We unpacked some boxes at work, and I took home the packing foam. Going to add two strips on either side so the radiator is nicely settled in there. They'll be secured with rolled-over duct tape.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2283.jpg
Back of the case. Two Yate 80's in the bottom, one D12SM-12 in the middle area, just secured the same way the original CM fan was. I have some fan grills to add to the 80's later. Those are mainly there to cool the pump which will sit right in front of them.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2284.jpg
Wiring, taped to the back of the mobo tray is a Logisys CCFL controller, and the fans from the rear of the case. You can see past it to a mess of other wires; that's from my power supply, it's non-modular. Those will be neatened up, as of now they're already moved up top and out the side.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2285.jpg
This is the only thing I should have gotten but didn't. That's a piece of foam from work again, sitting next to the power supply. It's a 650W Olympia from Silverstone; so the foam shouldn't get burnt or anything because it's next to the fan. The interesting part is that I took some thin one-side-sticky foam from an air conditioner, and placed it along the bottom pieces of the PSU cage. It made inserting the PSU difficult, and screwing it into the backplate was nearly impossible. However, it means there is now some thin foam there, so it should knock down on vibrations.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2286.jpg
D-Tek Fuzion; I'm sure you've seen that before too. 3/8" D-Tek barbs.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2287.jpg
A small assortment of goodies. Primochill Liquid Utopia UV blue, DD red fillport (when I bought that, I thought I was using red and 7/16"), some thumbscrews (turns out CM gave me enough), some brass fittings, a plastic T-line, and AS5 12-gram tube.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2288.jpg
Case window! w00t.

That's all for now; the loop is going together tonight.

Hmm. It says that it's anodized, will that be enough, or is it really going to be a problem? I kinda need a fillport, don't have any other way to bleed it.

Can you spare the $12 for the Delrin version? Get teh store you bought it from to exchange for the Delrin version and pay for the shipping back to the store. No, anodizing isn't going to save you from imminent doom ! Really, I'm trying to save your butt from a lot, a lot of future hassle.

See the difference in the Delrin version, and it isn't just the color.

Yeah, I believe you're helping. Just tired of delaying. I guess I'll find something to shove into the tube until Monday/Tuesday, and get the Delrin from Jab-Tech. Thank you.

Is there a reason your not using the TC gasket between the rad and fans? It will help insure all the air the fans move, is coming through the rad, which will mean better temps.

Heh, I got burned by Gigabyte as well on my 7600GT. I decided to make my own full cover WC block for it (http://www.dangerden.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9086). It's still in the design phase.

Oh, that's a gasket? It looked like sticky foam, and was crumpled, so I just set it aside. Oops.

An observation... those two memory sticks on top of a Zip Lock bag isn't the smartest idea in the world. You understand static electricity?

Yeah, I do. Not a lot of places to stash them, I lost all of my old anti-static bags. Not too worried though, it's New England, no static electricity around for months. *knocks on wood*

Yay, an update. My friend had issues this evening, so he didn't make it. It ended up my father helped me, extra pair of hands and drilling/bolting mostly.

Have you heard of entropy?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2289.jpg
My table proves entropy is true.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2292.jpg
ASUS drive just above the controls. I'm adding a screw hole tomorrow so that I will have two screws for holding my hard drive. The hard drive basically has stopped me since about 10:30 (it's now 11:40).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2294.jpg
I believe cables multiply. They reproduce pretty fast too. Most of those are just jumping from the PSU and from the front bay controls.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2290.jpg
The motherboard has been mounted. My MCW60 will be mounted tomorrow, but it's just going to lay against the side of the video card until my X1950Pro arrives on Monday. The pump has been bolted down, with some foam underneath it to help with vibrations.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2291.jpg
A little closer. I'm using a Thermalright LGA 775 backplate, with the D-Tek included screws (no springs or such, just the screws). I have nuts with washers (plastic washers) against the motherboard on the CPU side; is that a problem? The chipset block is hard-mounted using Swiftech's kit that came in the box. For both blocks, they're using 3/8" fittings with O-rings, no teflon tape.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2293.jpg
A stock Cooler Master fan, attached by two long screws into some extra standoffs. It just barely clears the 24 pin wire connector; but it will provide plenty of air for the memory. Also, from that picture, you can just barely make out how the 12V CPU wire comes in, and the RPM wire from the pump goes to the CPU fan mount.

That's it for tonight. It should be running tomorrow.

End of the project; these pictures are from all over today, starting with around noon, ending with midnight.

The loop, having just used heated distilled water to soften the tubing.

Yes, I will be replacing both SATA and IDE cables soon.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2298.jpg
The radiator in its nice home. Padded below and on the sides with some heavy dark gray foam, I don't even need zipties or screws, the foam is so tight.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2299.jpg
Huge jump, I know. Filling kept me so worried that something was wrong I didn't think of getting the camera. I got a 30 mL syringe, and kept using that. This was also after my pump died... brand-new Laing DDC-2, it absolutely burnt itself up. I think it was defective in some way, it shouldn't have gotten that hot. So the tubing got pinned back, there was still enough air in the loop to pull out the pump and then slide in my second that I had bought spare. That spare was definitely one of my best decisions. It runs icy cool too; suspended in the air with a couple of 80's behind it. Do I send the first back to Laing as defective, or take it back to the guys I got it from (Microcenter in Cambridge)?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/darth_sauron/100_2300.jpg
Computer just powered up. Logisys CCFL UV lights in there; unfortunately, that Primochill additive doesn't glow at all, despite being supposedly UV reactive. :(

For you sharp-eyed veterans, enjoy the bubbles!

I got that same Craftsman precision screwdriver; God I love that thing.

It's the best item I've gotten (So far) from the Orchard Supply Hardware bargain bin at the checkout.

Nice build! I'm working on getting my Mcr320 into the top of my stacker; With the same blocks and pump (+ A modded DDC top).

Can we get some pics of the radiator in the front? :D

It's held in place by some foam packing material. No zip ties, nothing at all... just foam. It's that tight of a fit now.

why isnt the tubing full?

MotF Bane
07-14-2007, 10:21 PM
The tubing is full now except for the fill line coming from the T. It's not quite a finished product, and I'm still trying to judge if it's completely bled, so I won't fill the water in all the way.

I have this insanely high-pitched whine; very quiet, but such a high pitch I can't stop noticing it. Could the pump be making that noise?

NickS

Very nice build there :). BTW, OP & IanY, the Aluminum of the fillport shouldn't affect anything at all unless water from the loop is making contact with it, and it won't. ;)

the whine could come from literally anything; check the psu, fans, and pump.
