I run many many rigs that run BSD and Linux but I don't need to post questions to which the answers I already now or can be discovered by checking the specific distro's readme

I started with Suse a few years ago but have gone to Ubuntu and it's my main OS. I still have a XP box that I use for gaming every now and then.

Linux has come a long way since a few years ago and I would encourage people to give it a try. It's free like beer!:yepp:

Good to see that there are some knowledgable people around. Like I said I am still a noob in that arena. I've done ubuntu, mandriva, freespire, fedora, and a few others I can't think of. Kinda settled on Fedora core 6 and been using it for bout 4 months now, just toying with it. I find that some of the documentation is kinda hard to understand sometimes still for me, but persistency usually wins :)

I prefer Gentoo and Ubuntu. Gentoo requires a lot of hacking, which is time consuming and sometimes frustrating. I like Ubuntu because it is based of Debian and their wonderful Debian packages coupled with apt utility. There's no performance benefit from compiling Gentoo on x86_64 machines since generic code gets optimized evenly on all 64-bit capable processors, but this changes when you compile 32-bit code since you choose the level of optimization ranging from i386 to i686 processors.

I have tried Suse, Fedora and many others, but I dislike all distributions that are build of rpms packages. Those distributions are only good for install and nothing afterward (such as actions as upgrading, compiling something because you will run into dependencies hell)

I'm a big Linux and Debian fan

hi all...I'm new to linux. Currently have Fedore 7 installed in my notebook.

I've been thinking to building a budget intel rig soon and i noticed that some o/cable mobo's dont like linux LOL (due to JMicron SATA controller?).

So, which mobo is fully compatible?

Not so many Linux posts since it doesn't have as many problems as M$ (perpetual beta) products.

Used to use Gentoo, now using Ubuntu 7. Only thing I liked better in Gentoo (other than optimized bootstrapping) was its Samba implementation.

Ubuntu Feisty Fawn. If you get a black screen with ATI cards, install from the alternate install cd in text mode and then DL the fglrx drivers. Without this, you will have problems.

On my rig, I run Gentoo 64-Bit 2.6.20-r4 along with Vista Ultimate 32-Bit. I use Gentoo more, and Vista is just for a couple of things and gaming.

Why don't you run the 64bit vista.

Oh by the way, I am brand new here. My name is Mathieu. It is pleasure to be a part of the team.

PS: If you're wondering why I have a Fedora Core wallpaper when I am running on Ubuntu Feisty Fawn, the answer is quite simple: I love that wallpaper!!

@Krid P.. Very nice setup you have. I really like fedora, not just the wallpaper. I really like the system monitor you are using. What is the name of that?

Why don't you run the 64bit vista.

It's not as well developed as the 32-bit version. So, that's why I'm still sticking with 32-bit.
