I'm trying to build a nice gaming rig currently I have:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
ASUS A8N-E
2 GB OCZ DDR 400 @ 2-2-2-5
ATI Radeon 1900XTX
WD Raptor 150GB

I'm looking at something like this for my next setup:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ Windsor 2.8GHz
ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe Socket AM2
Crucial Ballistix 2GB DDR2 DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) @ 5-5-5-15
ATI Radeon HD 2900XT
Another WD Raptor 150GB for Raid

I'm really stuck on the memory issue. Will that motherboard support DDR2 1066? I know it has something to do with the FSB but I really don't comprehend how memory interfaces with everything else. I'm looking to build a much faster setup then what I currently have. Can anyone give me some pointers and maybe explain to me how memory works.

Thanks,
Aspekt

i agree wit SaFrOuT, upgrading from socket 939 to am2 is not worth the money, i would sell your graphics card and get a 2900xt, or maybe consider upgrading to c2d as it gives better performance and overclocks very easy and should be able to get well over 3ghz with ease, if you do not know how to overclock nows the time to learn.

something along the lines of a
cpu - E6320 or e6600,
mobo - Gigabyte GA_P35C_DS3R
ram - G skill HZ 6400C4
gfx - 8800gts or 2900xt
psu - corsair hz 520

When would be the most reasonable time to upgrade?

Once fully DX10 games start coming out, like Crysis. Then you will know what exactly you need to run some of the newer games. Especially with x38 coming out, the move to ddr3, new graphics cards.

i would say that wait until 22 July and get a Q6600 for $266

for games a Quad core is not the smartess move right now

i guess the best way tp upgrade is to get a DX10 as soon as Crysis is out to enjoy it on ur current system which will be very able to run it ( except maybe u will need to run ur cpu @ 2.4 or 2.5Ghz so it won't bottleneck the DX10 based vga )

and by the start of 2008 u can see what the new socket from AMd will be like and then decid if u want to upgrade ur system or not
