View Full Version : Good temps in my Horizon?

Hey guys,

I'm trying to determine if these temperature numbers are good or not... I'm currently running an E6600 OC'd to 3.65ghz@1.45V with my new water setup. I'm seeing 33-35degC idle and 52-53degC Orthos load. This is about what I was getting with my previous air setup.

Before, in my Tsunami, I was running 3.6ghz@1.43V around 30-31degC and 49-50degC load, under a lapped TT Big Typhoon with all of my high CFM fans turned way up. My current system is near silent, which is what I was going for. These temps just don't seem right to me for some reason. My dual 8800's are running 49-50 and 48 degC, respectively, and I have intake air pushing into the top front PA120.3 (cooling the GPUs/NB) and case air pulling out of the rear bottom mounted PA120.2 (cooling the CPU).

Your thoughts?

Hmm...I would think those temps are actually decent...?

I'm running my E6600 @ 3.4 (1.4v) and IDLE at 52C on air, and loading at 63C. Granted our room temps are probably different, but I'd say that those temps aren't too bad at all. Especially when you're running .5v higher and 250mhz faster! Then again, there's ALWAYS room for improvement when it comes to temps :p.

Have you tried lapping your CPU? It appears that a LOT of c2d's IHS aren't very flat. This might drop your temps 2-3C...?

Yup, CPU is lapped, as was my Big Typhoon. The FuZion is stock, but supposedly is factory lapped. I forgot to mention that I reseated my CPU block twice, same temps. AS5 is still curing.

those temps sound good to me... what is your ambient?

Have you tried using another TIM other than AS5? There's a thread in the stickies, I believe, that show MX-1 "beating" AS5 by 2-3C. You could give that a shot :).

And yes...I would NOT lap the Fuzion!

[EDIT] Your CPU temps...were they generated via coretemp/TAT? Or were they coming from your BIOS?

Ahh yes, I keep realizing with everyone's help that I left out some important details. :P Ambient is around 21-22degC, and I'm using TAT to show temps. I may have to give MX-1 a shot just for the heck of it. It's amazing, with w Fuzion and a MM UFO Horizon, reseating my CPU block (which used to seem like an impossible task in the ol' Tsunami with the Big Typhoon) now takes me around 5 minutes to do. I love this thing! :)

recent pics?

temps looks good.

my ambient is about 26C:

idle: 40C
load: 50C

this is with a E6600 @ 1.4125V
500 X 7 for 3500mhz

your temps seem GREAT!

Yeah Andy, I wasn't planning on lapping the FuZion, I was just wondering if maybe the mating surface was flawed at all.

I'm starting to feel much better guys, what this tells me is that my temps are pretty normal for clock speed and voltage, and that my temps were insanely good with air! :)

I prefer MX-1 to AS5 also.

Temps may have been good, but NOT the noise. :ROTF:

3.6 @ 1.45v load will be 48 - 53 with mine as well. Thats a normal temp. Also, your mobo sensor might be off a few deg which is why on air and water the temps didnt change much. Besides alot of times with high end air to water you are only talking a few degrees anyways. The temp of your room will affect temps as well, the water in the loop can only be as cool as the ambient temps.

Overall those are good temps. See if you can lower the volts a little. Or drop your speed to 3.60, lower the volts and you'll prolly knock off a few deg.

Yeah, it seems like 3.6ghz is the wall my chip is at. I can run 24 hours stable at like 1.43V at 3.6, and anything above that requires a big voltage jump just to achieve those extra 500mhz. I may turn it back down to 3.6 to keep the load temps around 50deg or so. 3-4deg for 500mhz doesn't really seem worth it when I sit down and think about it. Thanks!

Well guys, I am definitely a happy camper tonight. I installed a 120mm Yate Loon in the left 5.25" bay of my Horizon to get some outside air into the case without having to pass through the PA120.3 first. Check out these numbers! My temps went from 33-35C idle/52-53C load to 30-32C idle/47-48C load. Just one extra YL = 2-3C cooler at idle, and 5C cooler under load! All temps measured with TAT, ambient is 20-22C. :woot:

Thanks! I can't do too much gaming though, don't wanna cut into my crunching time. I'm gunnin' for you andy! :P

I also bought a tube of MX-1 along with the fan/grille from Petra's to compare with my AS5. I just reseated my CPU with the MX-1. Gotta love this Horizon! It took about 8 minutes to meticulously remove and clean the CPU with ArctiClean, apply MX-1, and reseat CPU. Anyway, I used a dab in the center, about twice as much as one would use with AS5. Temps seem to be about the same. Tomorrow I think I'm gonna remove the CPU again, try a thin line down the CPU, and see which gives me the best temps. Not bad though, I have the same temps with uncured MX-1 that I had with cured AS5. Looks like the 2-3C difference with MX-1 may just be true!

You may want to spread the MX-1 to completely cover the cpu top - it's pretty thick stuff.
