View Full Version : Stacking Fixed Resistors?
Radio Shack does not have the pots or resistors i need. Would it work to solder resistors together in a line like 2 10k resistors with a leg of each soldered together to equal a 20k resistor?

ya know i havent been able to find 20k @ any radioshack.
OK thanks. Another question though. Theres always a gold line on one end, so should i solder the end with a gold line to the opposite end of the other resistor, or does it not matter?

and as long as we'r at it is it all right to use the micro pots or the big metal dial ones.

I think you gotta use micro ones.. I haven't been able to get any of my big metal dial styled ones to work... 8-/
if they are just resistors just hook them together, they are bi-directional (dont care which direction the current is moving). The gold line is probably part of their color code to tell how many ohms of resistance they are.
Ok thanks. I have about 10 different packs of resistors and they all have a gold line.. i looked at and it just means they are 5% tolerance.

doesnt matter which side the gold ring is ..
soldering in SERIES will make it total resistance=resistance 1 + resistance 2
in PARALLEL 1/Rt = (1/R1) + (1/R2)
If you solder them in series the ohms is additive.(2K+2K=4K)
If you solder in parallel (2K+2K=1K)
