View Full Version : Southbridge cooling for evga 680i MB

I asked this question over at the evga message board, but got no replies so I thought I'd try here.

I've done some searching, but can't find anything that matches what I'm looking for. I have an stock (not wc) evga 8800gtx, and I'm looking for a non-EK south bridge solution. (I'd love to have an EK nf4, but I can't find one.)

Does anyone out there have a wc south bridge and does not have a wc 8800gtx? I know that is weird, but I don't want to buy something to find out it won't fit with my current 8800gtx. I eventually will cool the video card, but I'd like to get the chipset cooled first. I have a DD 680i block for the NB coming, so I've got that covered.

I guess a more important question might be, do I even need to wc the SB? I have a Jeng Teng 2 (?) air cooled single heat pipe on it now.

Thanks for any opinion.

:up: Since the hardmount has been added it is a great option and makes it allot easier on the chipset themselves.

I'm still not sure if the MCW30 will allow for an 8800GTX to clear it if the 8800GTX is still air cooled like the OP states.

I have one on my 680i southbridge and I have a 8800GTX. Clearance is close but fine.

You have to use the screws from the front and screw them from the back of the mobo. Works like a charm :)

Your 8800GTX is aircooled?

The MCW30 WILL clear an 8800GTX card only if the card is watercooled. If it's aircooled, I don't believe it will clear as the large heatsink contraption blocks it. However, the last time I tried this, I didn't get the hard mount kit yet.

I think your best bet would be to PM Gabe or try in the Swiftech forums for the official answer.

As a EVGA 680I owner, and having 8800s I have to say the stock cooler and MCW30 will not fit. Granted I ahve GTSs but still, the card is long, and the SB is just to close, as I am thinking of water cooling the SB as well, this is something I am looking @ also.

Doh, sorry folks. My 8800GTX is EK blocked. Didnt even think about stock. I figure if you are WC'ing your southbridge you would be WC'ing your vidcard:)

OH.... edit because i didnt see you ment AIR cards.


Oh i dont know if it will fit if your using the stock heat sink.


But i want to say i dont think it would. The tubes would block you.

Well, I posted over at the swiftech forum, and the consensus there was the MCW30 won't work unless I wc the video card. This all started because I couldn't find the EK NF4 block in stock, and didn't really want the alphacool block with the offset barbs. The good news is PerformancePcs is showing them in stock today, so I snatched one up.

FYI, They also are showing the EK 680i nb block in acetal in stock as well. Stand to reason they would the day after I order the DD version. Oh well, I'll have a little of everyone's blocks.

Guess I should have mentioned the need for 1/2" fittings. Innovatek is 8mm.

Just a little update and consolidation.

So far I know that these blocks will NOT work on an EVGA 680i MB with the stock air cooler on an EVGA 8800GTX:
MCW30
EK NF4 (tried it this weekend)

Still don't know about the Alphacool NexXxoS NB-SLI 1 and if it would work with the stock cooler.

For me, I give. :rolleyes: I'm getting a MCW60, evercool ramsinks, and Swiftech mc-21 heatsinks, and after I get that installed, I'm going to use my EK NF4, as it should fit then.
