Basically... which parts of a PSU generate the most heat?

I took the cover off mine and the 2 banks of heatsinks are cold. I`m wondering about swapping the fan for something quieter. I want to know whats most likely to take a hit as a result

I took the cover off mine and the 2 banks of heatsinks are cold.

Hopefully you did that with the power disconnected - the primary side sinks are very often always live.

I really liking your avatar, looks like she's following in your footsteps. LOL, she looks very mischievious and may get zapped sticking one of those screwdrivers in your test bed or shorting one of those power supply caps! LOL

That's my OCZ PowerStream in the pic. She scratched the FSCK out of it with that screwdriver. Had my back turned for only two minutes. :(

Anyhoo... OP, the heatsinks are cold because they're doing their job. ;)
