Last time I was in CompuUSA they had the Sony STYLEPRO™ E540 21-inch (19.8 vis) for roughly $550, I think it's the best 21" but that might me more than you plan on spending. I've been using Viewsonic monitors for the last 4 computers I built and think they are excellent.

here is a link to a black mag monitor that Iwas thinking about buying for my son's pc. It's $200 at bestbuy.

Here's a monitor designed and recommended to be run at 1600 x 1200:

Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070 SB (http://www.necmitsubishi.com/products/home/DetailedSpecs.cfm?product_id=232&division=MITSUBISHI)

I have this monitor for my gaming rig, and it is totally excellent...by far the best monitor I've ever had the opportunity to sit in front of. Yes, it is very expensive, but it delivers professional grade picture quality, resolutions, and refresh rates.

They don't come any better than this.
