Macro Thread

Let's dedicate a thread to macro photography. If this gets popular I will make it a sticky.

I won't restrict it to "true" macro pictures (larger than life size) because we wouldn't get very many posts. Pictures posted in here can be anything created with the Macro Mode on your camera, or with a macro lens.

The size limit will be 1024x768 per picture. I want them to be large enough, but I don't want people posting full-size pictures in here straight off their camera. I would hope people have more common sense than that anyway :cool:

It helps to post EXIF data as well, but it isn't required.

I am not afraid of spiders but what's so interesting in taking photos of them? i have bought a camera recently and "super macro mode" is the most often used one; but I never thought of making flowers photos. I shot hardware (slowly completing a collection of bare silicon cores :) ), some daily use things, Warhammer miniatures... but never spiders or flowers.
Will post more pics when my brother gets back home with my camera.

Canon's best all around macro lens is 500$.

Most would even argue that it's the sharpest lens Canon has ever produced.

I believe it to be related to Lymantria Dispar but not sure about it though, I mean it's the closest thing that visually matches. I only saw it once in my 11 years of living here Belgium (Tervuren). So feel free to identify it.

Read the original post. I did not limit it to true macro shots only, because hardly anyone would post as not very many people have the equipment to do true macro shots.

A couple of pics taken with my new Raynox DCR-250 Macro lens. These are handheld indoors, which is extremely difficult to do with a magnification lens like this. I had to use F2.7 for enough speed to get clear shots since they are handheld, which limited the Depth of Field.

I will use an aperture of F8 the next chance I get at outdoor macros which increases the Depth of Field (area of picture that is in focus) since its so paper-thin with this macro lens. With a steady hand and IS though handheld is certainly possible with this setup.

Check your manual to find your camera's min and max focusing distance in macro mode. That is the range you have to be in for proper macro focus.

The camera is a Canon Powershot S3 IS. Using the Raynox DCR-250 macro lens gives a magnification of 2.5x allowing you much closer shots. You need to be at max telephoto to use the lens.

I find focusing doesn't really matter much because if you move the camera back and forth that serves as manual focus as well. I got identical results setting manual focus, and just leaving it and moving the camera similar to using a handheld magnifying glass.

The depth of field is very small and you have about a 1cm "window" to be in otherwise you see nothing. I can't get very close to the object, probably 6 inches or so away but I didn't measure it.

This gives me the ultimate in versatility - pop on the macro lens for extreme close-ups, take it off for a 36-432mm focal range with a 2.8-8.0 aperture range, optical image stabilization, continuous burst shooting, and basically a built-in camcorder all in one package. I also have a circular polarizer that I make good use of, 2x4gb SD cards that I fill regularly, and a set of batteries that last me over 1000 shots every time.

I've got my bases covered ;)

Except for low-light shooting and any time I would like high ISO...things this camera cannot do well unfortunately. If it did though, Canon wouldn't really have any competition.

Macro shots require the proper lens. The circuit board I posted was approximately 8" from the lens. Actual picture is much larger then real life.

yup, but this is the "poor mans" macro lol... i had no $1500 for proper dSLR so i bought this compact Fuji S5800 10x zoom for $290, im quite happy with it. Its my first real cam lol. im Just being used to photography

DSLR's are not THAT expensive. Pentax k100d+kit lens+old 50mm lens mounted backward can produce 1:1 shots for what 500$? Still not cheap but not crazy.

finally got a macro lens for my 20D...the cheapest poorly built macro on the face of the earth but for the $100 it cost me, it is definitely worth it. tack sharp and almost true 1:1 without dropping a fortune is always nice. now if i just had the eyes to properly focus when in this tight :)

One problem I see with doing the reverse lense trick is the total lack of DOF. The in focus range is pretty abysmal.

My wife told me I could get a new camera, but I have to decide between a new camera and a new case for my computer. :shakes:
I will get a canon xt or a nikon d40. I'm leaning towards the d40.

They are in focus for the most part, what he meant is that they aren't actually macro in the sense that that are not 1:1. And I agree, I appreciate the attempt but not macro. Theres a very good chance that, unless you have a dslr and you have a macro specific lens or your using a reversing method, that your not actually shooting in macro.

I really really like this shot, excellent DoF there. How is the noise in the full size image? ISO 800 isn't exactly preferable but at least the resized image looks great :up:

If for portraits, a small DOF is what you're looking for, for macro photography - due to the short working distance = very shallow DOF - it becomes a problem, because you have to step down your lens ---> less light on the sensor ---> the need for using a high(er) ISO.

ISO 800 is more than OK on the 20D and even ISO 3200 should be OK for printing up to A4 format if the exposure was right an you had enough ambient light.

The above pics were with a 55-200VR + the kit lens (18-55). I have no tripod so when you try to focus that close you tend to be pretty shakey. I could zoom out more but you run into vignetting BAD. I would like to get some manual lenses for that. I need to find the right combo or get a reversing ring. I may make my own macro lighting.
Do you want me to send you a Black Widow from a natural inviroment? There are a couple of young ones under my truck right now. :D

Those appear to be out of focus slightly, or something is causing them to just not be very sharp. It certainly isn't movement as your shutter speed is plenty fast enough to stop everything.

It appears you are using ISO1600 - is this intentional? Bring your ISO down to 100-200 when outdoors for the highest quality images.

Yea its hard to stay still when you are squatting down. I am going to go to Fry's today to see what they have for tripods.
I didn't check the ISO before I took the shot. I will have to look and see what they were. I don't think the ISO on the D40 goes to 100. 200 is the lowest.

Better, but still something is off. Are those cropped? That just doesn't seem to be showing what the D40 is capable of, like there isn't a lot of resolution. It doesn't look like camera shake...are you pre-focusing?

They are resized in paint. It is on P with some changes ( sharpness, hue, etc.) I think the res is on high but I change it often so I'll have to check.

If you use 2 lenses do you take the front one and devide it into the back one.
Sorry for the 1:1 question that was stupid.
So if I have the front lens set to 55mm and the back one set to 200mm that would be 3.63:1 or 27:1 or .27:1?

Not too bad, got pretty close in some of those. Some of the shots seem to have quite a bit of noise, what ISO were you shooting at? Also are these just resized down, or cropped then sized down? It seems like the shots (like #2) would be sharper - especially with a macro lens :shrug:

Thanks. The reversing ring is great but you have to shoot full manual so you have to adjust shutter speed to compensate for the different aperture sizes. Also because the lens doesn't connect electronically you cant use TTL flash so you must also set the flash power manually. Altho the above pics were taken in bright sunlight so a flash wasn't used. I will be making my own flash defuser when I get a chance to go to the plastics store.

Wow Guys. these are some great pictures. somewhere in Water Cooling theres a similar thread but all close up shots of peoples water cooling systems. and then they got started on the cool pictures and all started showing off there best shots.

Anyways I have a question for all of you guys. I've recently been getting into taking some time and doing a little photography. but I don't have a camera worth While. I've had it about 7 months and I just got it cuz it was hella cheap on a great close-out sale.. I have the Kodak M1033 HD 10MP, 720p Video Camera.. It's pretty decent. It takes some amazing pictures outdoors. I have some great pictures of the Sunlight and things like that. but low light conditions it's not the best in the world. They are usually $200 give or take. and I got mine for $74.99 on close out. so thats why i got a not so great Camera.

anyways could anyone help me with how exactly I should be trying to take these Macro shots. I know I don't have a nice lens or anything. But it should be able to take something half decent right? Or I'd think so. It has smart capture that chooses settings for you based on what ur shooting it at. that sucks.. then program. it's general pics. then one where you can choose anything.. Macro says for pictures closer than 28 inches.

So how should I be taking these. with the timer, on the tripod for still shot. but how far away. and should I be using it's Zoom, flash? all that. I'm basically a Photography N00b. but I'd love to get into it more. as I think I enjoy it a bit actually. Any help would be nice.

Nice picture.. must be that make shift.. or the fact that your at 100mm with a 2.8 1/90 with 100 ISO.. I checked. very clear shot. I like it.

Tested D700 with mine Sigma 150/2.8 APO DG EX MACRO. Like full-frame body much, ISO 1600 fully operable, none-to-low noise level. Such is impossible completely on smaller format cameras, i got much worse images from D200's ISO400.

Marin I'm guessing you're shooting in AdobeRGB, that's the reason your colors are being washed out, since it's being converted for web viewing, sRGB.
