The GPU itself won't be out till June/July...but I'm wondering when/if Apple will be getting these.

You really won't find much information unfortunately. However Apple did get Core Duos and Core 2 Duo Xeons before released to general public. And iMacs are long due for an update, so hopefully very soon :)

Now that ati/amd have merged, i doubt Apple will be putting ati cards in new macs, as they have such a close relationship with Intel.

After seeing the macbook pro's with the 8600, don't think you'll be seeing ATI products in macs this time around.

I certainly hope so. Apple need to get off their asses and update the friggin' Mac Pro already. It's been 11 months and it's still configured with the "stellar" 7300GT or the "super stellar" x1900xt (underclocked, BTW).

All this iPhone nonsense has knocked Apple off track.. Last iMac update was about 11 months as well. Mac mini?? I don't think that thing was ever updated.

Many people have been posting in the Mac Pro forum at macrumors about how sick and tired they are of dealing with Apple's snail's-pace approach to updates.

Ya i was definitely shocked to see EVERY new iMac with an ATI videocard. I am quite glad they did. I sure ain't an ATI/AMD fan, but competition is better than no competition.

The new IMac's are pretty sweet. I would have much rather saw 8800's in there, but HD2600's aren't too bad :)

They have enough trouble managing the heat as it is. I'm kinda suprised we even saw 2600s I was expecting 2400s

The mac mini has been updated every +- 6months since its release.

Isn't it possible to put your own videocard in a mac pro, as long as it's supported by MacOSX?

The last update was very close to a year ago. It was upgraded the same day as the last iMac update.

mac pro? a year?
just remind me of when the 8-core mac pro was announced / released? or am i too whoozy thanks to too much heat right now?

the mini, that's another story. it's actually funny to see it got an update as well, just when people thought it would've reached the end of it's production line. too bad it's almost gone unnoticed due to all the pr the imacs got.

still i'd prefer the imacs to have somewhat upgradeable graphics cards, as in not onboard stuff. the hd2600.. well let's just say it doesn't cut it for me. so mac pro would be my only option as i can replace the cards there :(

Ya the Mac Pro's update was in January. The videocard in the new iMacs are not onboard, they are MXM-II cards. So in theory they are upgradable.

Speaking of the new imacs, anyone buy one yet? I am currently selling off my rig for one and would like peoples opinions.

I got a 24 Inch tonight at my local Frys. The display is BEAUTIFUL. I also grabbed 4 gig of patriot ram for it. Works wonderfully so far, Also a copy of I work 08. I really like the new key board a heck of a lot more than the old I mac one. My 20 inch G5 was getting really long in the tooth. Also I really dislike the mighty mouse, after a few minutes I went and found an old MS optical mouse. The relocation of the function keys like volume and eject will take some getting used to but will probably be for the better, but whats up with F19?

They do look very nice indeed. Not bad, but the upgrade prices on extra and HDs are just flatout to high.

The upgrade to the 2.8 gig extreme edition isn't too bad but not great either. But the Ram and HD upgrades are usually apple, really high.

F4,F5,F13-F19 all should do nothing. They can be set to whatever you'd like them to.

I am kinda eyeing these new Imacs. I have to read more into them. people say the Video cards are MXM II based cards which means they can be upgraded:D

Just went to best buy and looked at the 24 inch and all I can say is WOW!! The screen was just gorgeous. I need to find out if the GPU is like 256MB GDDR3 HD 2600XT. If so I just might get a new Imac 24inch. Even the build in speakers are not bad at all!

vengance_01

BTW the screen in the 24inch is an LG H-IPS panel, the same that is in this NEC LCD. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824002168

The video card also is an HD 2600XT mobility based card. Its slightly underclocked, but I bet we can bring the clocks speeds back up to normal specs.

That's the only reason I don't have an iMac.

I would be ok to go back to a Core 2 Duo processor with no overclock (even knowing that is in fact a laptop based processor/motherboad with fsb limited to 800), that's ok.

But go back from a 8800 or X1950XT to a ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB really sucks.

I think I'll wait until they upgrade it to a 7900 mobile based car or something more powerfull.

Ty for keeping this alive.

For all those interested, here are videos of the imac 24" playing Medal of Honour Airborne, Bioshock and Quake 4 on 1920x1200 max settings.

As you can see, they play remarkably well. MoH is the only game that gets a few slowdowns because at that res, even the HD 2900XT finds it difficult to muster 30fps.

It's the combination of a well clocked Intel + a customized HD 2600PRo that's really a Mobility HD 2600XT that allows most UE3 games to be played well on high resolutions, not to mention the new Cats help too.

At 1680x1050, you'll get the best combination of res + performance + quality.

Oh and incase anyone didn't notice, the iMac with the HD 2600s at $1499 beat out HP's 20" $3000 desktop replacement HDX notebook...which no one is taking beyond their office/bedroom anyway, making it a big rip.

It's a like discrete desktop/work package that still manages to get 6k 3d06.
