Is is possible / safe to OC a laptop? would the heat cause fire just like the Dell laptop that had defective Sony battery?

Depending on the laptop/cpu it may be possible to overclock

In terms of safeness it depends on several variables, cooling, etc

it'd help if you said what laptop you had.

i915 chipset with pentium m 7x5 cpu could gain 33%

If you are lucky you can use ClockGen to overclock your CPU but you need to know the name of the PLL chip.

I wouldn't recommend clockgen unless you're going for that little bit of bus overclock, since pcie/pci will float

Depends all on the laptop specs. Processor, chipset, and stuff. The major problem is that many laptop's (the older one's) do not have pci/agp locks and so sound and other pci devices in the laptop will stop working. The lack of bios options and settings mean you are very component limited, such as by your memory (if they cannot handle upped speeds)

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600, getting out of date w/ pentium m dothan 710 1.4ghz @ 14x125mhz = 1.75ghz. I also lowered the voltage so my battery life really hasn't been compromised. The one drawback is my sound doesnt work, but hey I can get a PCMCIA sound card.

I used RMclock to modify voltages and a version of setfsb. You have to search for software that is compatible with you're system and pll.

If you have an old pentium M dothan and a intel 915 chipset you could overclock 33% with a pin mod.
