View Full Version : Loop confusion

Its that lovely time again to build a new system. I picked up a QUAD GT and will be buying an e6600 or e6420. GFX will be either the new r600(if it EVER coems out) or an 8800GTX. Everything will be OC'ed as high as it can go.

I want to cool the NB, CPU, and GFX. Right now I'm thinking of running a single PA 120.3 for all three with a DDC+ w/ petras top. Would it be worth it to make 2 loops instead of 1? Maybe put the cpu on its own loop with a pa 120.2 and have the gfx and the chipset together on the pa120.3?

The reason why I want to cool the chipset is basically because I own a MAZE 4 chipset that isn't used at all. So might as well throw it in there.

Any suggestions on what would be the best possible configuration for these 3 components? Would all three in series on a pa 120.3 be a bad thing?

Thanks

I don't think you will have any problems cooling the list with a 120.3 with the CPU you listed. I would seperate the loops if you plan on upgrading to a Quad core CPU and SLI / X-Fire in the future.

The plan is to upgade to a q6600 when then come down next price drop. Do the quads really put out that much more heat?

Seperate the loops. You'll thank me for doing so later. ;)

Alright whats a good way to seperate? Cpu and chipset on the 120.3 and the gfx on a 120.2?

Quad on a loop by itself. NB > GPU1 > GPU2 on the second loop.

Edit to Add: There are those that will say the CPU on a loop by itself is overkill. When the CPU is not a Quad I agree. But, when you slap @ Kentsfield / Xeon quad in the machine and bump the voltage you will need every bit of that independent loop to reach maximum overclock with minimal heat.

That sounds good to me. Thanks:toast:

Am i just making things harder by trying to WC the NB? THis is my first Intel OC and I hear the 965's run hot on the NB.

If you already have a NB waterblock then you might as well use it IMO :)

You're going for the highest OC you can obtain correct? WC the NB, @ one point or another you will have to bump the voltage there to get stable as you know more voltage = more heat = need for better cooling. You might as well get it right the 1st time and not wonder what if. ;)

Yep, if you got it, use it. Like HardH2O said, you will thank him later by going ahead and doing the dual loop.
