I am finally going to try out water cooling my Q6600 and should get my gear next week.. What I am wondering is, would it be beneficial to have the rad right in front of the a/c vent.. Here's the situation, my computer is in the basement and there is an a/c vent about 6ft. above my case. What I was thinking of doing was putting the rad in front of the vent to blow cold air through it (thinking it'll make it run even cooler). Its always cold as hell down here and I usually keep the vent closed but if this will make me run even cooler then yeah I'll open it:D I can move my case on top of my table and it will only be a couple feet from the vent to make the lines a normal length.. So, what do you guys think?

Thanks in advance for your input....

The performance from watercooling usually depends a great deal on ambient temps. That is if all your equipment is top notch, then yes, you would be able to gain some temp drops from that. But if your equipment is just "ok" then it won't really be worth the extra effort IMO.

In watercooling your temps will never drop below your ambient temps, therefore the colder your ambient temps = Lower idle/load temps.

if you do it.. hard mount the rad a couple inches from the vent/wall and make a cardboard shroud around it. A filter might also be wise, AC vents are full of dust

Yeah, it wont be much of an effort to make this work.. I am going to be using-

Apogee GT
Thermochill 120.3 radiator
Danger Den D5 pump

My CPU runs quite cool as it is on a Big Typhoon (about 60c at 1.36v 3.5ghz). I am not to sure what my ambient temps are here but its MUCH cooler than upstairs. Cold enough that I have to wear a sweatshirt:D

Another question, will it hurt performance of the rad if its a couple feet above the actual case?

if I could easily put my rad in a AC vent I would.

If you can see where the case is and the vent above my tv you'll see how easy it will be:D

We can tell that you're living in Virginia Eric! :p:

Just make sure that there's hot air coming out of the vent. It might not make sense, but it will work wonders.;) :D

Flow might get hurt quite a bit...You probably want a pump that's stronger than the D5. There's Iwaki MD20s on ebay for 22 dollars shipped :D

Heh, you should have seen their faces when I fired up my phase unit... WTF!!!? is that...

DO, in the winter nothing comes out of that vent (there is baseboard heading) so I was thinking of doing this for the summer.. Its so cold down here that I could hang meat!!:D

LOL, look at this post and you'll deff know I am in VA.. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2072827&postcount=121

Well Im not sure how much colder the air out of the vent would be, but if it is significantly cooler, then you are probably going to want to insulate.
