***EDIT***
UPDATE:

After hours and hours of research...and fantastic help from those of you that posted with comments, I've settled on the majority of products I'm going to use.

Case: Silverstone TJ09 Mid ATX Case (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2929618&sku=S35-1147)
-W/out the side viewing panel

Power: Ultra 600w ATX, SLI, SATA ready power supply (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2974309&sku=ULT31848%20K)
-Question: Is 600w enough power for the components I plan on using?

Motherboard: Intel 975XBX2KR (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2563503&sku=I69-2145)
-Thank you kemo for the suggestion

CPU: Intel C2D E6700 (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2503466&CatId=2398)

Memory: Crucial Ballistix Tracer 2048MB, PC6400, 800Mhz (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3004770&sku=C19-4502%20PROMO)
-Does anyone have any other memory suggestions? 2 gigs under $200?

Video Card: NVIDEA 8800 GTS Superclocked 640mb GDDR3 (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2824836&sku=E145-8008)

Price is just about $1500 for all the components shipped...that is after the 6700 drops in price next week. Only a few more questions I have:

-would 600w power supply be sufficient enough (or overkill) for what I have planned?
-Are there any other memory suggestions for 2 gigs of 800mhz, DDR2 that's under $200?
-any other suggestions or comments?

Once again, I want to thank everyone for the help...These forums have become one of the 3 that I frequent every day!

Cheers :toast:

Seriously dude, I'd go Core 2 Duo. It's the better alternative of the two at the moment, and priced equally compared to AMD.

What be a comparable core2 duo chip to the 6000+? The x6700?

E6400, E6600. An overclocked E6300 (3.0-3.1GHz which is usually attainable @ stock voltage, stock cooler) would blow the doors off the 6000+.

In terms of performance, E6600 would likely be closer to X2 6000+. Although I'd wait for Intel's price drops if I were buying a C2D.

If tigerdirect is must i would pick those

Intel 975XBX2K (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2563503&CatId=1572) 200$

E6600 (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2503444&CatId=2398) 350$

Crucial Ballistix Tracer (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3004770&CatId=2261) 200$ - 30$ rebate

EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS Superclocked / 640MB (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2824836&CatId=2514) 410$ -30$ rebate or EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS / 320MB (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2900232&CatId=2669) 300$ - 20$ rebate

BUT like other guys said wait till the end of the month

if the programs are memory intensive, why dont you get 2 x 2gb?

TeeO

Thanks for all the responses...

Kemo- thanks for the suggestions, I think I'm going to wait around for a few weeks and see where the prices go. I also didn't realize that Intel had such an upper hand in the dual core processor world. When I bought my last comp it was AMD out performing Intel...guess I was wrong!

xenatr- For the sake of cost, I was hoping to save a bit of money. On my current setup i have a gig and the programs all run fairly smoothly...i figured 2gig would be a perfect number to cost ratio...

l'enfer- The 1950xtx looks intriguing but I wasn't too sure of the compatibility of the ati cards with the MB i was looking at...meaning it's SLI and if I ever wanted 2 gpu's, I'm assuming sli doesn't infer crossfire compatibility.

...now I play the waiting game.

Hey all, this'll be my first post in these forums, so I'd like to say hello!

Now that's out of the way, I'm planning on building a new rig mainly for gaming, but also for chemical reaction and chemical structure digital manipulation through various memory intensive programs (I'm a biochemical grad student). I have a budget set aside of about $1500, not including a new monitor. I've been looking around the forums and online stores for the best deals, and this is what I've come up with. I'm curious what everyone's input is:

Processor: AMD Athlon X2 6000+
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2905661&sku=CP1-AM2-6000

MB: ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2224204&sku=A455-2300

RAM: Corsair DC TWINX 2048MB PC6400 DDR2 800mhz
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2227141&sku=C13-2024

Case: I want a plain black case, and under $250. Preferably a mid or full tower, but that's all I know. I don't have the first idea about what kind of cooling system to go for. I've seen an Air conditioned case for around 200 which seemed intriguing (link). but I don't know which type of cooling system is better, liquid, air, air condition, or whatever...
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1597229&CatId=1509

Vid Card: Open for suggestions, I've been out of the market for 5 years so I have no idea what to look for and what is quality or not. With the MB i'm looking at, I"m guessing NVIDEA is the way to go, even though I'm partial to ATI...I'm only looking for one card as of now...preferably under $400.

Optical Drive: I already have a Sony 16x Dual Layer IDE dvd-rw drive in my current rig, so I'm going to rely on that for now.

HD: I have an old 250gig IDE drive I'm planning on sharing the one IDE ribbon with the Optical drive, for now. Once I get the comp up and running the next step would be to grab a new SATA drive and begin raid-ing...

So far, my cost is at $1300 assuming I use all $400 I've allocated to for the vid card, and $250 for the case. With my budget in mind, does anyone have any suggestions on video cards, cases, and comments on the hardware I've already pointed out? I have a 19in LCD which I'll be using in the meantime, and once I'm over the painful wallet hit, I'm going to invest in a 22in widescreen monitor but that'll be sometime down the road. I have a keyboard and mouse setup currently that I'm happy with, and until that changes I don't think I need a new one. I also would probably want a new sound card when I buy a new audio system for my rig, but that too would be down the road a bit.

Basically I just want a core system that will run smoothly and efficiently. I've been running a 1.7ghz, 1g ram XP box for 5 years...I think it's about time! :woot:

WOW! that is a nice case but i think you should get this one http://www.svc.com/rc-631-kwn1.html its cheap good performence and plus your not a gamer or anything are you? if not this is perfect for you since your computers looks dont matter so much and you save tons of money.

TeeO
04-15-2007, 05:13 PM
thanks for the suggestion on the case...

yes...I love games...that's the main reason i'm looking at getting a new box...b/c i miss the days of playing the up-to-date RTS games and what not. Now I can barely sputter through the singleplayer on low settings. Plus the stuff I need for school...

I have, however, never gotten into overclocking. I"m assuming that's why everyone needs all those extravagant cooling measures. Is there any potential downfall to overclocking? and running your comp 24/7? b/c mine's on all the time...

As for overclocking ...

Any of the above coolers should be fine. I personally run a Thermalright Ultra 120 with only a ducted fan (a la Dell style) with my e6600 oc'd to 3Ghz. C&C3 and SupCom run great.

Well I don't see any downside of OC'ing, quite a debatable issue though, even if we go by the pessimists, ur processor will be long outdated before u even have a reason to blame OC'ing for it's death. (Given u OC correctly)

TeeO
04-16-2007, 08:10 AM
Thanks for the input on the prices, performance and the comments on OC...I guess I have to wait a week or so before I decide on anything!...

as of now (after the price drop) I'm probably going to go with a E6700, compatible mother board, 2 gig of ram (maybe 4...still undecided) and the 8800 GTS 640MB version. I'm looking at about $1200 after all that...then just need a case and I'm set!

I'll keep everyone posted on the specifics when the time comes!

BTW, I absolutely love these forums! Cheers to the mods and community!

That is a sweet stable overclock chart, you have anything like that for the quads?

What style of software are you using? I've seen some of the molecular dynamics software (such as NAMD) run simulations in about a third of the time as a pentium 4 processor on a E6300 at stock. Your programs would probably see the same increase. Core 2 will do very nicely, though AMD would work well enough as well.

As a suggestion, I'd grab a video card with plenty of memory, not sure aside from that.

Good luck!

Edit: According to your last post you should have a great computer :p:

I'm looking into migrating all the software on my lab computer @ school to my house so I don't have to spend so much time @ that god-forsaken place (I work better at home...).

We mainly use free simulation software like GROMACS and TINKER. Mostly we work off a cluster, but I'd be able to get small work done at my house if I had a decent enough computer.

Question: What do people think about these 2 towers' I'm looking at...

1: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2486991&CatId=1509
-I like it because of the power supply

2:

-No Power Supply either...

Does anyone have any suggestions of other good towers/power supplies under $300?

Yes you computer looses its life, lets say from 10years to like 7years it depends on high you overclocked it.

You love RTS do you like Supreme Commander i am guessing you do since you are getting it free with your processor....

I think you should over clock you processor to 3.0Ghz it wont make any difference to your computer life and you can easily do it with stock cooling, but you will get much better performence.

The only reason I'm planning on getting the 6700 is that word on the street is that in a week or so the price is going to drop significantly...meaning from 550 to 350. So If I wait a week I can get a 6700 for the price of getting a 6600 now. I just put the link there for reference to the processor I want. I've read many reviews of it...I love RTS games...I haven't tried to play it because my current computer is about 10 generations too old...sooooo yeah, I guess I'd like it a lot!

Why do you ask?

You do NOT need a 700W PSU for that... total waste. I'd go for a GOOD 500-550W PSU. You could go higher in terms of wattage...but...its not necessary.

Oh because if you get the game i want to paly you than just play random people online plus we both will be new to the game and not get raped by the people who have months of expierience than us. Obviously this is going to be once you get your new rig and i am getting my new PC as well, soon i hope.

Yep, Corsair HX 520w is more than enough for that system.

Sooo, I'm about to take the plunge. As expected, the E6700 came down to 340 or so...My total cost has ended up being around $1996 and some change (with the monitor, after shipping). before I spend that much doe, I'd like one last head nod, or jeer with regards to my potential specs...

Case: TJ-09 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16814130080)

PSU: FSP FX700 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16817104015)
-I'm going with 700 for upgradability (potential sli in the near future, and large SATA array)
-and yes, fuzzyballs I borrowed this from your rig thread...I like that it has long cords, because from what I hear the TJ-09 case requires long cords.

MB: Intel 975 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16813121059)
-Question: Why does newegg show 2 listings for the same board, except one's retail and the others OEM? one's $50 more expensive? What gives?

CPU: E6700 (http://www.newegg.com/product/Product.asp?item=N82E16819115002)

Cooling: Zalman 9700 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16835118020)
Silverstone 120 case fans (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16811999346) (figured silverstone makes the most compatible fans for their case)

RAM: Corsair 2gb pc6400 800mhz (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820145034)
-I'm still very hesitant about this ram, i'd like to go with the buffalo firestix, but they're not in stock. Any yay, or nay to the corsair? Any suggestions for good 800mhz 2bg sets for under $200?

Vid Card: EVGA 8800GTS 640 Superclocked (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16814130080)

LCD Monitor: Samsung 22" Widescreen (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16824001096)
-Good Choice?

...This appears to be a system that would make me happy. I'm still hesitant on the memory and the MB...any final comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! :toast:
