Thought this might be an interesting read, FYI...for those interested what the latest Raptor firmware is..a guy purchased a 74GB ADFD drive made Febuary 22nd 2007 and the firmware was still 00NLR1.

I hope they bring a hybrid raptor soon. That's the only thing worth considering before switching to SSD's.
And if they don't have one planned in 2007 then... well it is good riddance to WD and all the rest hdd makers as far as boot drives for this market segment is concerned.
RAID makes to little real life diference in most cases and brings to much problems to be worthy as an e-penis.

Do the home work first about Hybrid drives:

Better invest in more RAM, then in Hybrid drives!!

I agree. I can't wait for SSD's to become mainstream. I'm gonna get one when the price comes down and the capacities go up. Especially since I'm a silence freak.

Of course I know it makes more sense to buy more ram, but one whould thing hybrid drives would offer more than just faster boot times or app starts.
How about file copying? well see when thy bring more serious contender to the market.
Any way my point was if they intend to release anything before ssd's come around, they better do it now cause their cash cow (entusiasts) will surely dry out as soon as there is adescent ssd to buy and community will have a new hero. Then well see people saying: WD, who?

there is nothing wrong with raid at all.
Sure your not gonna see 100 more FPS in your games.
But sure things will load quicker. But thats not the point. I use raid, and yes 6 hard drives in raid 0. Why? Because I like to be able to extract huge winrar archives, multiple at a time, without it taking the 1+ hours it does with a single seagate perp.

With 6 drives, that time is reduced to a nice 10 minutes.

Funny thing is, even when Solid state disk's are the norm, I'll be raiding them lol. Probbally 6-8. Maybe 12 by that time.

What size rar file takes more than an hour to extract? I'm just curious b/c the longest I can remember is about 10 minutes for a couple gig file.

It depends on how the format is laid out I think. I think it's possible for certain files that are, lets say 1 gig to take an hour on the same system that would take 10 mins. I have no clue, but I think it's possible. I spend little time with extracting, more converting file formats with video.

actually its multiple rar's I extract at once.

With 1 hard drive doing 6 will take me an hour , of about the 4GB size.
When using my raid I do 20+ and in 12-17 minutes they are all done.

^ Exactly what I mean... to use the raid you must firstly know it is THE thing you must have for things you do often (not like 1 time a month) and that it will cut down on wait times for YOUR tasks. Otherwise it can bring to much problems if you are picking your computer guts all the time :D

yup, raid 0 is one of those things, where if you don't need it, why bother, get a faster drive, or maybe one of these new hybrid raptors that should be just around the corner.

Think 20,000RPM is out of the question for the next gen raptors?

I would think 15K if they even increase the spindle speed...where did 20K RPM come from? lol...
