So how many people can play a game of planet side at one time? I was thinking about getting it cause it seems like a smarter version of counter strike.

bah.. i played in the beta... it was mearely ok. I got boared after a week or so of playing. Took way too long to get a team togeather and go to the battlefield. Get tribes 2 and play on a 64 person server.. much better

Theres no way to NOT have a monthly fee if the server is centrally based [as opposed to customers hosting their OWN servers].

Having the bandwidth to handle all the traffic to and from the central sever costs thousands of dollars.... no way to keep up with those bills if there is no intake.
:cussing:

User-hosted servers have their own limitations in that they are not persistient. There's no translating yesterday's victories or defeats into the present.. it all starts from point A every time. Youre not playing with all those who bought the game, just those who are on the server youve logged onto for the moment.

Centrally based servers push the envelope beyond those limitations.. and yes.. it costs money. :shakes:

Just reassure yourself with the fact that people used to pay insane amounts of money in hourly plans to play a flight simulation online. At the end of the month their bill could be hundreds or even thousands of dollars!
:explode:

If you dont want to move beyond user-hosted servers.. fine. No need to put down those games taking the other route though.

That said, I didnt go for Planetside.. I'm just not too keen on those that launch too early making it a "paid beta". When the game matures a bit I'll take a look though..

Well, I just tried the 7-day trial and bought the game and am into my 1st free month of subscription, so I thought I'd share some of my opinions.

PS is a game that is well worth the $40 for what you get out of the box. The graphics are fabulous (if your comp can handle it) and the game has a lot of initial versatility. I love the cert program, I love that it's easy to get a couple certs initially so your character can get right into the fighting, and I love that I can just log on whatever character I want depending on what I want to do that night - be it my infantry weapons specialist, my fighter pilot, my MAX suit specialist, or my infiltration-hacker. I also like the fact that, unlike most MMOs (I am a MMORPG veteran), I don't have to dedicate a lengthy playtime every time I log on in order to achieve something. However, all this said - it's probably not worth $13/month and even as someone who loves fps, I am probably not going to resubscribe at this point.

For conventional MMORPGs, the vast majority of the monthly fee goes not towards bandwidth but towards development of new gameplay features as well as the infamous "balancing". However, Planetside's development team clearly demonstrates that they are either incapable, unwilling, or simply too slow to introduce such updates on a regular basis. For example, the only gameplay addition that has been announced since game release is that of LLM (Lattice Link Module) which intends to align PS with more of a Tribes2 "rabbit" orietnation, but is (on paper, since it hasn't been tested publically yet) a very haphazard and limited implementation. Most patches include totally inadequate testing - and I mean this relative to the rest of the MMORPG industry, which is saying a lot! As such, I just can't see how a $13/month charge is warranted. I could see $5/month for PS, but not $13. The development of the game is just so insubstantial when compared to conventional MMORPGs like Dark Age of Camelot (Mythic also charges $13/month).

Of course, there's probably no better time to try out PS now that you can download the entire game for free from fileplanet (1.4gigs, tho) along with a free 7-day trial period. Of course, I think potential users should be warned that you'll probably get hooked enough to buy the $40 game, but by the end of the free trial period you might not want to pay the $13/month to keep your account active. Like I said, it's definitely worth the $40 for fps fans - especially for people like me who play games for several hours/week; I get my fair share of fun out of it compared to other non-subscription games I buy. I'm certainly a lot happier about the cash I shelled out for this than on Shadows of Undrentide. :(

Well, canceled my subscription today. This game just gets way too boring way too fast. There's only so much you can do, only so many certs that you can get. That the servers have a tendency to be underpopulated doesn't help.

The announcement of the expansion pack is also pretty frustrating. Basically SOE took everything that users had brainstormed out as necessary improvements to keep the game interesting for players and keep players subscribed, and added it to the expansion (instead of patching it). Every single thing that they've said so far in the expansion (urban environments, more versatile environments in general, skill-based systems instead of certs, more vehicles, more weapons, etc.) was from the official forums.

Sorry, but that's just a signal that the game is nothing more than a cash cow. As players move to the more-enjoyable lands of the expansion pack, the existing playing areas will become even more barren then they are now. This will make the expansion a "necessary" purchase, because many of the problems with the existing lands will be magnified by the playerbase move.

Anyway, there's my rant. PS could just have been so much more, and the announcement of the expansion is just so disappointing. Even Mythic wasn't this bad with DAoC. They weren't talking about glorious expansions three months in when the game was sorely lacking in content and a reason to play.
