View Full Version : Where to buy Delrin?

I'm wanting to be a bit adventurous and make my own top for my DD975x block.

Why?

Well no matter how careful you are with lucite, if you tighten the barbs by hand and then wet the top of the lucite, the water will seep into the little cracks and make them show up.

Too brittle for my liking and I'm actually using it on a RD600 and although it fits just as well, the spring loaded hooks are at an angle. So to rectify these both I would like to have a dab hand at making my own top.

Any where I can buy enough Delrin from? Preferable a place that can give me the right thickness at least and from the UK/EU if not the U.S will suffice.

If you're just needing enough for the 975 you could buy one of these and clone your lucite top with a router and a small flush trim ball bearing bit.

Eddy's Delrin/Acetal Tops (http://ekwaterblocks.com/shop/index.php?cPath=21_47)

Or, you could buy a sheet of 1/2" Delrin from these guys with a minimum $100 order:

1/2" Delrin Sheets (https://secure15.nexternal.com/shared/StoreFront/default.asp?CS=plastiweb&BusType=BtoC&Count1=279812037&Count2=196952462)

I know what you mean about lucite. I'm considering changing out the top of my DD 680i lucite top as well. So far so good as it hasn't cracked.

Good point on number one with buying a top and then cutting it down to size, I'll head in that direction.

Thankfully the cracks are just tiny ones where a bit of pressure has been applied to the four screws and barbs, but it doesn't fill me with the best of confidence.

Try ebay. I bought my delrin to make my own res and tops from a store I found through ebay. Try 'delrin sheet' or 'delrin bar'. It was based in UK.

Delrin in the UK:

theplasticshop.co.uk

I think they offer CNC machining as well, but I'm not 100%.

They have no minimum order charges.

Delrin is very very expensive so I hope you don't regret buying it!

Hmm the plasticshop looks good!

Just browsed the DangerDen site for the top dimensions but it offers no dimensions. Anywhere else I can get them?

Why don't you measure? Beware that even that tiny piece of delrin will be pretty pricey.

As a reference I payed £13 for a sheet measuring 510x220x8 mm, unfinished. Bear in mind that there's a minimum size on cut to size pieces.

If you have someone CNC a one-off piece expect to pay around £30 - 50 for the job, unless you can get "mates rates".

I tried that route to make a custom copper heatsink for the VREGs. Soon I changed my mind.

Well it comes to £30.00 for these two together:

8mm 100mm x 100mm
10mm 800mm x 500mm

Thats after delivery and tax, but I've noticed:

being as this apparently fits the 975x board, then maybe like the DangerDen, it fits RD600 too?

McMaster-Carr has Delrin in stock, with various thicknesses.

Hmm, well I'm going to see what Tom can do as I'm in two minds at the moment.

Problems with the DangerDen lucite top:

Brittle!
Doesn't fit RD600 properly
The hold down plate which goes over the barbs means I need thin ass clamps. Can't find any in the UK!

What I plan to do with the Delrin top:

If I can make it so that the hold down plate and the actual piece that the barbs screw into on the same delrin block then it would solve the clamp problem.

The question is, I think DangerDen MAY have made it like this to get a certain height (the luctie hold down plate + actual top that contacts the o-ring with barbs) to get the right torque on the mounting posts. Although I'm thinking the 975 version was a cheap skate way of making due to having the previous intel block and all that was needed, was to make a new hold down plate. Why re-invent the wheel?

So I think it would be best to go with 10mm Delrin to get similar height.

Off a link someone posted here you can order up to 3 samples of differnt or the same material. I have so i'l;l have these in a few days, UK based.

The DD Intle range of NB blocks are all the same from the 865/875p stuff years ago. No top plate has chnaged, the hooks are still same size and everything!!!

DD is just markiting up there stuff to shift it thats it!

Hmm I've seen a nice table saw in order to get a flush 90 degree angle and only 40 pounds. Problem is my Dad will get angry with me for buying it as no where to put it. Ain't going in his shed because he doesn't keep it tidy and sick of digging to get to stuff.

I'm just gonna get a mate to cut me mine on his band saw!
