View Full Version : Simple question... fastest 7200RPM drive?

I will be building my computer the first few days of March, and I am undecided on my hard drive. I have one 150GB Raptor X ordered already, but I want a 320GB or a 500GB for storage to go along. So the simple question is, if performance is most important and reliability is 2nd, what is the best 7200RPM hard drive I can buy?
Please recommend me a brand and a model number... i think it will be between WD Hitachi or Seagate.
One more semi-OT question... when I get my computer up and running, I assume for best performance I should install all programs and games and the OS on the RaptorX and put my music/videos/pictures on the storage drive. Is this right?

Is this right?I'd go with the Seagate since you'll use it for data and it has good seeking, the best STR out of all the 7200rpm drives and a great warranty. Which answers your second question, yes.

I would personally say the Seagate 7200.10 is at least the most common price / performance drive right now, you really can't go wrong with it. Not that there's really anything wrong with Hitachi's, there's just a lot less data out there on them right now because of the low volume of their drives in our market.

Seagate 7200.10. Almost, if not as fast as raptors in real world perf.
A toss up between those seagates, or the Samsung Spoint HD500LJ...166GB platters so high data density, and quiet.

Cool... I had originally planned on the Seagate 7200.10s but recently I've been having doubts or just wondering if there were better/newer drives out from other manufacturers. If the concensus here is that the Seagates and Samsungs are pretty similar I think I will go for the Seagates for the warranty and proven track record (for hard drives) :)

Matrix RAID can make a pretty benchmark, but the drives perform no better or worse compared to others in the same setup. HD Tach + drive of your choice in Matrix RAID0(though Seagate seems to be the choice)= smoke and mirrors.
