Hi guys, i'm still deciding whether to stick with my old Alpha PAL8045 or get a brand new SK7(will lap it due to numerous complains that it's having a rough surface).

Let's say that both will be using the same fan, which one will be the better one in terms of cooling? Well, actually, i'll be getting different fans, but would like to know how it performs wif the same fan. I'm having a Delta 48CFM on the Alpha but will be using a Sunon 39CFM on the SK7. Opinions needed. TIA

System specs for the rig:
XP1600+ AGKGA-Y @ XP1900+ stock voltage
Epox 8KHA+
512MB Kingmax DDR240
MSI GF4Ti4200
Enlight 300W PSU

Hope to get opinion from u guys.:D

well i was gonna say the slk-800, but i desided to look up the details, and the sk7 is just as good as the slk800, and its cheaper. So id say get the sk7, and a Good fan.. 80mm @ 55cfm+

Well, i did compare the SK7 and the SLK800's specs, that's why i settle for the SK7 due to it's cheaper pricing.

It's around 50 bucks difference in my local currency.

Hmm.... 80mm@55CFM seems to give quite a lot of noise, unless i dump in a TT SmartFan II instead.

well i have a 2100+ on a slk900u and i need a 68cfm fan to get it cool, but the hsf is still pretty warm at night with the side panels off.

So id get a reo and a nice fast fan, so you can controll the noice when you need to.

Hm... i suppose i'll get a Thermaltake Smartfan II to pair with it then. Since it comes with it's own rheo already. ;)

how much better is the SK7 than the 8045?

i'd say stick with what you've got, and rig up some kind of duct.

OverClockers.com has an excellent heatsink database.

The difference between those two sinks looks to be about 9c.

(25c for the SK-7 .. & 34c for the Alpha PAL8045)

* "Heatsink and Watercooling Roundup" * (http://overclockers.com/articles373/)

The air cooling statistics are the yellow values near the bottom.

What you should go with depend on what your needs are.
I'd say stay with what you have and get a better fan if you are
only doing light stuff.

But if you want to do some overclocking, I'd humbly suggest the
SK-7 with an ultra high flow 80mm fan with a rheostat on the
power lead. That way you can have the best of both worlds.
Turn it up when at high speeds and
still slow her down to quiet things if needed.

You should be able to get all that for under $45! :)

* 80mm X 38mm - Sunon Tornado * (http://www.bestbyte.net/Product.cfm?ProductID=923&CategoryID=8&Keyword=) = $9.75
The Vantec Tornado are just Sunon fans with a different
sticker and higher price. The SK-7 is $24 from the same vendor.

* 5w-100ohm Rheostat * (http://www.jameco.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ExecMacro/jameco/searchResult.d2w/report?sort=BPA&search=140513&Go.x=24&Go.y=4) = $2.99 .
These are cheaper and much more sturdy that those Zalman
"FanMates".:)

Hope you find those useful ........ good luck! .......;nnock:D

the Alpha in that review was tested with a 35CFM fan, VS the 55CFM fan on the SK7.

seems a bit unfair to compare them, doesn't it?

With a higher CFM fan (~80CFM Tornado, or even 65) the SK-7 should do better. I have said this many times, and it is right on par with the reviews. The design of the SLK series heatsinks calls for a very high CFM fan to get the killer results you see people getting. If you plan on getting a semi-quiet system don't go with the SK-7. I plan on rigging up a 92mm Tornado on my SK-7 soon just to see how much of a decrease in temps I get. All I am saying is if you plan to get a nice loud fan go with the SK-7. If you are planning on using something with <50CFM's go with the Alpha. :) BTW both are killer heatsinks, so it's not like either one is gonna suck. Good luck!

Well, i've ordered my SK7, and it's gonna be pre-lapped for a minimal fee(there's such service at a local store, which unfortunately ain't shipping internationally).

Probably getting it shipped to me today(Monday) or tomorrow(Tuesday). Will post results in comparison of the PAL8045 when i get the stuff, yeah, this is a folding cum secondary gaming rig for me. Too bad the chip could only clock up to 1.6GHz stable with stock voltages.

BTW, i'll be testing a few fans with my SK7, since i have an assortment of fans in my garage, damn, i have parts in there to prolly build up another 3 PCs without monitors, have to find some time to get them fixed to add more folding power to my team. ;)
