What are your thoughts on AppleTV and I wonder if this will open the doors for iTunes to sell HD-Movies now. I would hope so. I would much rather have a HD-Movie than a SD-Movie.

i am not to found of it.
I would rather put a mac mini in my living room, then i can get rid of my dvd player.
Also i can use the mac mini as a home server for files and all, also it would be nice to run torrents.
All in all it is only for some who buys lots of stuff on itunes.

Well I am encoding all my DVDs so I stream to it as well. I really don't buy movies on iTunes.

Ya the fact that the AppleTV doesn't have an optical drive of some sort is kind of a turn off. Or the fact that you cannot even any usb device (i.e. an external HDD or optical drive).

I can't get iTunes/QT to play my .avi's through iTunes, so this would be a no-go for me :(

I am encoding all my movies in mp4 anyway.
I never liked AVI. Always poor encoding and out of sync with video/audio. I have yet to have an issue with mp4 files at all and the quality is excellent with low file sizes.

What software do you use? You've got me interested....
It is Mac software. I use HandBrake. Although they are making windows software.
But it encodes fast as well even for 2-Pass.
I use a 1500 BitRate and 160 for Audio with its original resolution.
HandBrake is the best ever! I love this program and my videos look amazing.
if you like I might be able to setup something and I can send you a test file and you can see how you like it.

Hmmm, I have a dedicated desktop (PC) for encoding, gaming, and file hosting....so guess I'll have to find some Windows software for that....SUPER looks good.

handbrake is really good i like it too.
but most HD torrents are avi.
Where are you finding HD Torrents? Although I haven't even bothered to look either. I gave up on downloading movies a long time ago due to quality issues. I didn't like being at the mercy of who encoded them. I am very picky when it comes to my collection and how things are done with it.

AppleTV is just a media streamer. If you looking at media streams check out the AVS Forums at this link. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/
I have a Media Gate MG-25. It doesn't do HD, but was only $130 with a 40GB harddrive two years ago. There are or will be several other units on the market like AppleTV for less money. As noted above, check out AVS. The HTPC, media streamer, etc geeks are all over there.
See I am wanting HD as well.

The Mediagate MG-350HD supports HD (720p/1080i).
