Hi people, how are you? hope you're all doin well.

Well, i'm creating this thread because i might change my processor (sig) for an opteron 185 (2x1mbl2, 2.6ghz).

My x2 3800+ does 2.81ghz @ 1.425v rock solid, at 2.83 it gets unstable, and no matter how many voltage i put in, it doesn't go higher.

So, i was wondering, is there a possiblity for an Opteron 185 to reach 3.3ghz or so?

Thanks.

honestly mayby with extreme cooling, phace change etc.. the 185 line on opty's don't clock all that well. in fact they suck big time.
i think you should go for opteron 165 or 170 they are known to be a great clockers. don't waste you money on opty 185.

a 165 may not go much higher than 2.8 though...

yes but with a good stepping it may go over 3ghz.

My CPU was similiar, took my IHS off and now I'm rocking steady at 2.9GHz 1.534v :toast: I can push it higher with more volts but this speed is nice

What cooling are you using?

Edit: Nvm I see your using a Zalman, you might benefit more from upgrading your cooling instead of changing CPUs

I dont think changing his cooling is going to help much unless he goes for some sort of phase because I highly doubt on air/water that chip is going to go much farther. But even then he might run into cold bug issues. Hitting 2.8 on a 3800+ is nothing to sneeze at.

2.87 @ 1.475v, testing.
2.9 @ 1.5v, core #1 fails.

NewEgg has some really good 170's with great stettping coming out of their wharehouses right now hopefully if you are lucky you can still get the steepping like the one in my sig which is about a month old

I've been using the 185 Since Christmas, It's at 3.2 @ 1.52V 265 FSB on A8N32-sli Water cooling no problems yet

Smartguardian - 2.87g go orthos, 51c
Coretemp - 2.87g go orthos core 1 60c core 2 58c (ambient temp 31c)

2.87g failed, rig froze.
I think i'll stay with 2.81, there's no point in rising volts dramatically to get 50-60mhz.

ive been running 2950 at 1.44v under water for many months without issue. at speeds above this the heat output rises qutie a bit. i like to keep my 24/7 temp under 50 in any weather conditions and circumstance. and ive also got my 1900xt in the loop adding its share of heat. im running 2gb ballistix z03 at 245 3.3.3.9 1t with ease.

i am totally stable. i can run any game and combination of apps without crash for weeks on end.

i suspect there is a bit more headroom for benching and so forth.

im somewhat limmited by the POS msi muthabored i bought not being able to do much voltage wise.

My first Opty 185 sucked but this new 185 rocks.
Just put it in last night running at 3003Mhz at 1.29V Dual prime stable for 16 hours i just stoped it five mins ago.
Im going to see how low i can get the volts

Hi all,

Do you think that i can get 3ghz on my 185 by changing my air cooling system ? or is my opteron limit ?
witch air cooling do you think is better ?

Hi all,

I hit 3.0Ghz @ 1.3v with stock cooler,i don't know what steping it is(i didn't look before i put it on,so i have to wait until i get the chance to take the CPU out to find out).

I am able to do 3069 @1.47v but start getting hot,i think this chip can do a lot more but needs more than 1.5v and of course i need better cooling.

There's really no way to know until you try. Even if you have a "known" good stepping its still pretty much a crap shoot. My 185 is stable at a little over 3.1G @ 1.5v, using a TR Ultra-120 X. It runs about 35C idle and high 40C load. The Ultra-120 X with 2 fans in a push/pull is probably going to be your best air cooling. If you decide to go with the TR you'll need to get the 939 mounting hardware.

ive been running 2860 -- 220x13 for many months now. been gaming and folding continuously with zero crashes.

asus monitorign software tells me im at 48c while folding.

1.376v in cpuz - 1.4 in bios.

lovely.
