Comdex 2003, my display rig in the Abit booth (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=22693)had a heart attack firing up at 4.4Ghz and the PSU was dead. I tracked back out onto the show floor and found Tom @ Enermax who said sure my 450w power supply could handle the situation, so he gave the the PSU in good faith and I hauled it back to the Abit booth with Tom in tow and snapped it like a twig. Whoops, so we go back out the Enermax booth and grab the biggest supply they had at the show, it was a 651w model that worked great for the entire duration of the show.

Well as luck would have it this year at CES we ran into power supply problems again with a 1Kw single rail from another popular manufacture failed to post on the bench rig.

Tom was able to hook us up with the new Galaxy 1000w DXX (http://www.enermax.com/english/product_Display1.asp?PrID=70). This is a well thought out power supply design. The air flow through the PSU is obvious with minimal obstructions and beefy fans. The non modular will suite the most xtreme such as myself with SLI and quad raid drives. There is connections for dual R600 graphics as well as second 4+4 (+12v) cpu connection. Everything you would normally expect in a high end power supply with the capability to support dual R600 now.

K|ngp|n and I were able to push the X6800 up over 5.1Ghz with up to 1.9v, a fairly good push but it was very impressive to see how stable the voltages were at top speed. We dialed in the vcore with precision and the power supply worked flawlessly. No VC clocks on the score below but it was as the only saved 3D run above 5Ghz.

I have since moved this into my daily gamer and it takes it place in my signature for being a top notch product I would be happy with recommending them.

Now for the torture testing, it will take me months and several upgrades to fully test this bad boy, no need to requote the specs or brag about how life changing it is to own one. Time will tell and I will give updates with upgrades. The abundance of connectors will make this an obvious choice for those who need something this Xtreme.

Thanks Enemax for the assist again this year and for stopping by our event to check out the overclocking going on.

Antec Superlanboy, I have outgrown it and soon to upgrade to a Lian Li or Enermax case.

Omastar

Superlanboy was a great case in early 2005. :p:

CM Stacker 830 is always an option, I'd think. Handles long PSUs like the Galaxy well, too.

Enermax or Tegan?

To be or not to be?

I've seen a Tegan in your last configuration, what about?

Why now an Enermax?

Something I need to add to the write up is the noise heard when the power supply starts is completely normal.

After having two PCP&C 1Kw fail on me, it may have been a timing or load issue preventing them from firing up and I wasnt about to hotwire it at -100c and all voltage levels near maxed.

MY liberty makes the same noise...thinking it's the PFC module, honestly. The Galaxy seems to have much less of a "zap!?!"

I just got this psu.. LOVE IT.. so quiet.. and pretty.. and powerful. mmm

edit: the two transformers on this unit are both theoretically capable of producing 80A each on 12v... freaking crazy. it's really a two rail psu.. and it derives it's 5v and 3.3v seperately.. very nice for stable voltage when loading. the use of quality componets throughout it and lots of ferite beads on the leads of the components is a plus also.. :)

Nice PSU, bet it costs an arm and a leg retail though :p:.

Is that XS rig at the top of the page using a 2-stage -100c cascade in the bottom?

Charles Wirth
01-24-2007, 01:57 PM
Correct, that is the first cascade use in competition against Oppainter for the race to 30K. We cut the 19" rack mount in half and shipped it to Alaska where Kunaak hopefully is getting some use out of it.

That cascade ran for the duration of Comdex.

$280 over at Microcenter right now for the Galaxy DXX 1000 - EGX1000EWL-01 (http://www.microcenter.com/byos/byos_single_product_results.phtml?product_id=02436 54) Seems like a great deal. 24a on each of its 4 12v lines and 34a and 41a combined. :slobber:

What's the difference between the new Galaxy and the old one?

If it's just the new power supply cables shouldn't you be able to use modular pcie-2 cables on the old galaxy? (If you can get them somewhere, that is)

FYI, there's a new DXX version out with a dedicated 8pin 12v line for the cpu power (not just 4+4pin lead)... after, well, 10 days or so of headaches trying to figure out what's making a shhhhhhh sound coming from my PWM it was rules most likely to be ripple in the 12v cpu power lead so enermax is replacing my psu for the new rev of the DXX.. they say there is some change in internal circuitry also, specifically for that 8pin 12v lead.. I'm hoping it fixes the noise.. been through two mobos already and spent more time on this than I probably should have.. gah.. I'm tried. lol.

Anyways, the enermax rma people were VERY nice and very understanding.. quite pleased about that part of this experience. I should have the new unit by the end of this week.. I hope. :)

Well that's why I run two Hipper PSUs combined one TypeR 580w and one TypeR 750w. So I have all the power I need for my 3.7Ghz E600, 8800GTX SLI etc etc see sig. If new things come out I will simply replace the cheaper 580W one (for new CPU plugs or new 8pin VGA adaptors). So far I am enjoying great voltages not to mention that the Hippers look great and for a total of 1330W I payed less than a 1000W PSU that during these times of fast change may become obsolete so fast.

And BTW both of my Hippers are SLI certified too. Lol its a steal.

I didn't have the old Galaxy, but I have the new one. The PSU is in my TTake Armor tower, which has holes all along the top next to the PSU. That is about 1ft from my head and I cant hear it. One of the quietest units I've ever had.

Also if you have a TTake Armor and intend on buying this PSU, have patience installing. It's a bit of a :banana::banana::banana::banana: to fit in. You need to remove the USB/Firewire port for the top (one screw - easy), and take off three quick release front panels (includng the power/reset panel). Then slide the PSU in from the front. Avoid the urge to jigsaw, drill out rivets etc. It does fit :)

What's the difference between the new Galaxy and the old one?

AFAIK: Just the connectors.

I have one of each and I can't tell any difference.

And the similarities are enough to where when Tom @ Enermax sent me one Infiniti and one Galaxy to review and I told him that I'd do the Infiniti right away but the Galaxy would have to wait for later, he said (paraphrased) "ok since you've already done a Galaxy review and this one isn't that different."

I would like to see if the ripple on crossload issue is resolved, but it'll have to wait for a Koolance and Tagan unit to get done first.

Does this power supply have any noticable Whine or Squeal?

I've been using a PCP&C Silencer 750 quad with my badaxe 2 motherboard and 8800GTX video. I figured the occasional minor squeal was coming from my video card, but it wasn't bad enough to bother tracking down.

I recently switched to the P5K Deluxe motherboard and a 8800 Ultra, and the squeal is now pretty annoying at times, and it's loud enough to be easily tracked to the power supply. I replaced the power supply with another 750 quad with no improvement, so it's apparently just the way the 750 quad is.

So....I'm going to order the 1000 watt galaxy tonight unless someone says their galaxy squeals.

Charles Wirth
05-23-2007, 01:44 PM
There is a chirp noise of power up, other than that it is a very quiet PSU.

Ultras overclocked with quad core and four raid drives, no squeel.

cadaveca
05-23-2007, 01:56 PM
mine squeals under quad and 2 2900's, 4 drives as well. But the sound could be motherboard...although squeal was more prevalent with 850w model.

I'm loving this power supply! Nice and quiet, and it's got plenty of power for future upgrades. Not a hint of whine or squeal like my two PCP&C 750 quad's were doing.

I had one of these, model egx1000ewl-dxx 02 in my sig rig. It looked great had nice cables and had received good reviews so I thought it was the one for me. When I fired this thing up for the first time I noticed a strange smell now and then, kind of an odd sweet smell. I wasn't able to pinpoint the smell but I suspected the power supply. About four weeks later my computer shut down with a loud pop, the galaxy was dead. I consider myself lucky that it didn't take the rest of my parts with it and burn my house down. The only damage to the mobo was a burned out debug led, so I put my spare tt750 in and set about disassembling the enermax (screw the warranty). After removing the cover everything looked fine other than a blown 20a fuse so I pulled the pcb to see if there were any problems on the back side. I didn't see any burns there but I did find the worst soldering I've ever seen in my life. All the traces had been soldered by hand their full length, I would guess to allow them to carry more current but it was unbelievably sloppy, In some spots strips of solder were laid down in bundles of 6 or 8 about 2.5" long and partially melted to form big sloppy bridges, there were also unnecessary blobs of solder and lots of rosin. I could go on but I think you get the point. I replaced the fuse, checked the wiring for shorts reassembled and tested on small 12v load. When I flipped the switch it popped again burning a big black spot on the top of the pcb at a resistor that says R9. The unit I received can't be be indicative of enermax quality or more people would be complaining, so may be one of the workers just had a bad day. I don't want another one so I think I'll try a tt1200 next.
just in case it may help someone the dead unit was p/n; 801015990020 s/n; 71c0610541

dengyong
06-10-2007, 09:27 AM
I bought it at performance pc and the 30 day return period had past.
I had also added a single punchdown sata connector to the native line and enermax warranty says it can't be modified in any way. I modify just about everything in one way or another and accept responsibility for it at the outset. Its also not worth the grief (or the $330) for me to send it back to enermax and have them screw around for a couple of weeks only to tell me I voided the warranty when I added a connector. I would rather pull the cover and repair it my self or in this case post pics of shoddy workmanship. I've ordered a digital camera and should have it this week. I hope everyone else has better luck.

06-11-2007, 12:52 PM
Well it clearly fed 110v to low voltage parts of the pcb, it looked like a welding flash when it blew. If I got another one I would always wonder if it would do the same or even take out the rest of my system. I see your point tho, I am being a bit of an ass.

The fan faces down away from the top of the case so it can pull air in.
