Why is this so important? what uses it? How low is too low?

The 5v line supplies power to many things on the motherboard and cards. For instance, your cpu is actually powered by the 5v line. It takes the 5v in and reduces it to voltage that the processor can handle. I'm pretty shure that some GPU's use it as well. When I installed my GF4, my 5v line dropped like a rock (down around 4.4 with NO load on it, sitting in bios) on the weak 300w I had Same thing happened with the 12v (which hit 11.01 at the worst point).

For best preformance, you want this at or above 5v. Although, with my 550w, I still run right below 5v (4.98-5.10v) this would NEVER cause any problems. If you start getting lower then .25v under a ligt load, then you have a problem.

5v & 12v issues can cause some very unexplainable events to happen.

i noticed that you have a 8k3a+ like i do, and i notice mine is down around at 4.78 sitting in the bios, but u have to look at what brand of powersupply you have, not just how big it is. i have some pos turbolink psu rated at 420 max. it sucks , if you want to get the most out of overclocking, get well know powersupply, if you powersupply can't supply the juice, then the computer may just freeze, or just plain shutdown, and what are your temps on that board?

ive got the enermax 431w and the 5v rail plummets to 4.7 or so and its powering no fans etc ..the only thing running of it is board/chip/g4/mem/1x cd/1x hdd/1x floppy the g4 is one power hungry card.. hoping to get some sort of v mod done on it soon

I've got the Antec PP-412x and highly recommend it....5v is 5.1 idle and 5.0 even steven idle after some tweaking to the pots inside ;)

I've got the enermax 431 as well and I'm at my lowest at 4.8. This is not at idle. I'm powering a bunch of fans, cdrw, cdrom, floppy, hdd, gf4 ti4600, mobo, etc. I'm also oced to 1.92 ghz at 1.95v on the core and 2.9 on the mem. I'm adding an 80W pelt into the picture and 2 more hdd's.

i believe the 12v was at like 12.4 idle but as i hosed my OS trying to get this mushkin to do more than it wanted to, i won't be able to confirm that till later tonight ;)

I did some testing on the issue wit hmy elcheapo.
After i altered the pots and turned up the 5v, i got it from 4.8 to 5.05 at load. However the slap in the hed is the 12v thats climbing up to over 12.45, even 12.5 sometimes!!
During benches i get some strange BSOD which i have never had, so i turned back the 5V a little bit so i now have 4.88-4.92 at load.
At the same time the 12V got lowered to 12.2 which i feel is much healthier and the BSOD:s are history. This may be a coins. but i think that the 12V line is equal as important as the 5V.
What i noticed was when i had the 5V at 5.05 i tried t omove the hd to the hp controller, since i heard that it can take more fsb that way. It refused to boot!!Not even powered the hd or the cd up!! (both at hp)
That must mean that the HP controller is MUCH more sensitive than the Via controller as far as the 12V line goes.
I would not recommend the 12V higher than 12.2-12.3, thats for sure.

me personally i put a lot of the problem (well mine) down to the fact that by overclocking im lowering the 5v down and the power hungry G4 dont like it

I'm curious which 5v reading we are talking about..?

In the bios my 5VSB (standby voltage) line reads around 4.83 and sometimes lower under load..

The +5V line seems to consistently read around 4.98 volts or so.

Is it the 5VSB line we are talking about..? If so I think I need to tweak that pot a little...
