I've been out of the overclocking happenings for over a year so I don't know what's good these days. Right now I'm sitting on a 3000+ Winchester that never OC'd very well, 1GB OCZ value ram that was ok, and a DFI NF4 mobo that's still good. I'm looking to keep the motherboard and upgrade to a dual core processor and 2GB memory.

What's a good value route to go (and still be able to overclock reasonably well, of course)? I guess I'm looking to spend up to $400

the fx-55 is 140 on newegg now. there are some other great deals too, although the dual core cpu are more expensive. they dont have the 3800 x2 but some of the lower in dual core optys you might want to check out. for ram corsair xms, ocz platinum, g. skill, or even kingston hyper w/e it is, would be fine, although the first two would most likely give the best potential for overclocking.

forget about teh FX-55, u NEED a dual core

unless u can find a better deal for a used 3800+ X2 or Opteron 165/170
i guess this si the best choice now ==> AMD X2 4400+(89W) Toledo 2.2GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103626)

for the ram also unless u can manage to find G.Skill HZ DDR500 or OCZ EB DDR500 i think this is a nice deal ==> G.Skill ZX DDR400 2-3-2-5 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231032)

A lot of guys have had great luck with the Opty 165 from Newegg. Almost all are 2.7 GHz @ 1.4v and some as high as 3.0 GHz with a little more voltage.

If you're a SETI cruncher (as am I) you'll definitely want the dual-core. My Opty @ 2.8 GHz kicks out ~1300 WU's a day ...

My Opteron 165 overclocked to 2.8ghz 1.33v out of the box on my DFI with the IHS and the supplied HSF. idle 30°c, load 45°c.
