I want to build a new AMD rig, preferably an Opty. I was thinking of an Opty 165/170 but have seen the newer Opty 275/285. I'm new to AMD so don't really know too much about them apart from the basic stuff. I'm looking for a comparison against Intel processors, e.g., an Opty 165 is equivalent to a Intel xxxx etc etc.

Also, is there an AMD cpu in the market now that is reasonably equivalent to the C2D E6600 (I know it depends on what they are used for, but in general)? my main usage will be F@H and a file server as well some overnight video encoding/editing.

I'd also be interested in knowing which is a good mobo for overclocking an Opty.

Thanks!

the highest rated AMD cpu can't beat the Intel E6600, why do u want to by an AMD ?? Intel is the better solution nowdays

the opty 2xx series for mobos with 2 cpu sockets

buying a E6300 with the biostar P965 mobo will better than any AMD combo

Will a C2D E6600 outperform two 285 Opty's?

You mean 2 cores vs 4 cores?

And do you really mean to go for socket 940? It's an old platform. It's socket F for opty now.

Also price wise... um...
I believe a pair of two opty 285 will cost you around 700 to 800 dollars.
Not to mention you have to use registered ram, which costs 1.5 to 3x compared to ordinary ram.

You're right, better of going for an Intel quad core and be done with it! Thanks.

Eh, or you could grab socket F opty.

Though I cannot guarantee its performance.

why will u need a quad core for file server

It's not just a file server, will be doing video encoding/editing too. I might wait until early Jan/Feb to see what AMD have to offer before buying. I want something that is equally as good as the E6600 if not better. AMD or Intel...don't mind either.

if u can wiat then sure do since Intel will have a price cut @ Jan 2007

and in Q2 07 the Q6600 ( quad core @ 2.4Ghz ) will cost only 501$

I think I will wait, Q6600 @ $501 sounds tasty!
