Hello all here at XS...

Now, i've done enough 'basic' overclocking in the not to distant past (last year), but through some basic changes, and some help from you people, i'm gonna try getting my two PC's running as they should...:: Fast and stable.

Hopefully, i'll be overclocking both the The CPU and GPU, and wil be testing the setup's with prime95, XS Super-Pi MOD 1.5, 3D Mark 2001, 2005, 2006 and possibly Aquamark.

Lets start by out-lining the two main systems...::

System 1 ....:: Home / Work PC

All stock cooled, in a bad chassis, with 3x80mm + 1x92mm @ Stock Throughout

AMD X2 4400+ (2,400Mhz - Socket 939) (first week of manufacture)
2x 512Mb Corsair DDR-400 Value RAM.
Asus A8N-SLi Deluxe
Connect3D ATi X800XL 256Mb
550w Tagan PSU
200Gb Maxtor

System 2 ....:: School / Game / Fun PC

AMD Opteron 146 CAB2E 0602 GPKW (2,000MHz - Socket 939) @ Danger Den TDX
2x A-Data Vitiesta CH-5 RAM
Asus A8N-SLi Deluxe (w. Chipset Mod)
Connect3D X1800XT 256Mb @ Eddy EK X19FC
200Gb Hitachi 'Deathstar'

This case has 5x120mm fans, and a BIX2

Seeing as my second PC isn't here with me, i'll just get started with System 1..::

205fsb Stock vCore ect.

More tommorow.

funny how your game pc actually needs that X2 4400, ah well.

ive tried booting at 2.6Ghz, but its not happy.

i have reason to think my HSF is on its last legs...

236 x 11 (2.6Ghz)
HTT 3x
memory divider 166
1.45 vCore

try that

2.2 -> 2.6 is a BIG jump. Work it up slowly :)

nice and stable

Iw won't boot to 2.5Ghz no matter what i do....

11 x 228 = Restart
10 x 250 = Restart ect...

upping the RAM, CHipset and CPU voltages do nothing..

also, ive got 3 120mm fans blowing onto it, and with the radiator off and window fully open, ive got the ambient temp down to about 6-9*C and still no boot.

does the board have max async latency (MAL) and read preamble (RP) in bios? if so, loosen them and try again.

what stepping is this 4400 btw?

ROFL

my cpu 3800+ X2 can do 2.4Ghz @ 1.2v which si 0.15v less than the stock volt

i think u should read more about overclocking, read the stickies, use mem dividers, change the LDT multi and so on

sheesh guys, some of you should be ashamed :slapass:

mankz, what did you set in the bios, just changing the HTT?
my first guess is that you've hit the top end of the ram, as biohead suggested, try lowering the memory ratio. :toast:

Another thing 1m isn't even close to being a stability test, and you're only running 1! That's half the CPU! You need to run dual 32m ;)

Yep, the ram seems to be the issue....

the problem is, it starts booting, then when the windows logo showis up, it powers down.....

Im hoping that the 146 will work well for me.... aswell as the CH-5.

lower the memory ratio! :D:D:D

yes, yes, yes.... that can wait for tommorrow...

I've got a BF2 match to play tonight!

My cpu can do 2.8ghz on 1.4v. http://s38.photobucket.com/albums/e113/Serge84/?action=view&current=30.jpg

2.7ghz on stock.

Good for you.

My 5200+ can hit 3120Mhz with 1.45v stable - point is this topic is NOT about you overclocks, but rather this persons.

Hey Mankz - C^ here. ;)

Try these settings -

260Fsb.
1.5v CPU.
333 Memory Divider.
10x Multi.
3x HTT.

1.5v will give you pleanty of voltage for the CPU and is safe for air.

Is the BIOS flashed to the latest?

Good luck buddy. ;)

are you sure this will all be safe with stock cooling???

I think the BIOS is rev. 1011 which im lead to believe came with my modo, which is a 06-02-05 board.... (the date given in the BIOS.)

After-Crimbo, i might get a Tuniq-Tower and a bunch of fans and AS5 for this, or i might swap the chip with my 146.. and shove the 4400 under water, and aim for 2.8!

i would be looking to update the bios for sure...................

but i would be reading the DFI guides, you need to bone up on the settings to help your quest, it can make all the difference in the world......

Nothing about this is extreme like you would think in the title. Sorry but this is a extreme forum. We expect to see atleast decent clocks. Thats why some people are reacting like this.

Hence the reason why the topic is in AMD section for discussion and not the Xtreme Overclocking board. :stick:

Although we're used to high standards, we could lower them for once to help a newb, right?

no, it seems that some are incapable of being nice and helping out :p:

Mankz, as long as you keep temps and volts under a certain limit, the type of cooling you have doesn't matter. try to avoid going too much over say.. 50-55c

Okay. ive managed a boot at 226fsb with stock volts, but it died half way through 32M Super-pi. I'll have a go with 1.425v to start with.

55 is too high, i remember with my venice when it hit 55c it would bsod, i'd say 52c MAX!

If its anything like my old X2 4400 the temps just soar out of control once the voltage was upped, I had terrible problems with my A8NSLI too, it just did not want to work over 226-228FSB with memory in sync, my 4400 would hit 50degC on water with the IHS removed (2.75Ghz, low end water 10mm with two 7800GTX512 in loop) and needed 1.55v to do anything more than 2.5Ghz, itwould hit 65degC on air at 2,5  )

Knocking the memory back as suggested along with the HTT saw me more succesful on that board with a previous Chip (3700+) managing 2.8Ghz on a 255FSB but I can't remmeber what my settings were, the RAM was at approx 200Mhz though.

Same RAM on the A8N32SLI I have now happily runs upto 260FSB with 3-3-3-8 1T

try a new BIOS, makes a world of difference

Well, i decided that something was up, and i've had the Mobo RMA'ed and suprise suprise it was pretty fooked up when it got back to Asus.

apparently, it hasn't worked properly for alomsot 1 1/2 year. The temp's have all been reading 80*C IDLE so the PC was re-staring and all...

anyway, i'll try a 227fsb boot tommorow.

ive also been told that my old X2 4400+ CCBWE 0517MPMW with a sheared pin should work, and im gonna 'borrow' a mates TCCD, Ultra-D and SS for a little 'fun'.

just raise the voltage for your cpu you should be able to go even further.
