Hi guys,

My screenshot of my 3Dmark 2001 default benchmark is below. I have a Radeon 8500 which has been modified with a thermaltake crystal orb and tweakmonster ram sinks. I have been using rage3d tweaker with the lastest ati catalyst for WinXP pro.
My Radeon is clocked at 300/300 and I am now considering to do a voltage mod for the gpu. Has anyone completed this mod and what extra Mhz did you achieve from doing it? I read from various sources on the web about a pencil trick has anyone tried this???
My aim is too reach 11000 3DMarks with default settings. Please help dudes......

Paul

yup... tried and it works... instructions are in reviews section of my site somewhere (click my sig)
damn it... that's me pushed down in the £DMark ranks now :(
must get this vdimm mod done!!

Why is this a good score for the Radeon 8500???

I get 9216 untweaked/unoverclocked with an XP1800. I cant wait to try her out again with this new system (XP9.5x205). The Card i can get access to is an engineering sample, and does 325/325 from 275/275 :)

Marci cant find the 8500 mod on your site m8. Could you help please...

Thanks,

Then look halfway down that page... don't click the link to go to the new forums hosted reviews, just scroll down, under the link to my DDR-II/III/FCRAM article

Thanks Marci,

Found it m8. One more question though, which resistor controls Vcore and which Vdimm.

Thanks again,

er... good question... try HERE (http://www.xbitlabs.com/video/radeon8500-overclocking/) and compare the resistors you'll be pencilling to the locations of the vmods shown here...

Paul K:)

If you want 11,000 3DMarks...set up another partition on your hard drive and install Windows 2000, 4.37 4 in 1's and your best ATI drivers. That change alone will net you 300-400 points. WindowsXP is terrible for benching 3DMark with an AMD system...it cripples the FPS scores of Car and Lobby.

Win98 is faster than XP...tho 2000 eclipses it by a wide margin.

I like to get the most out of my system before I go for the volt mods...then you know you've got her tweaked to the Xtreme:)

Randi :D

Thats MrIcee,

I'll try that!!!

Thoughts on the voltage mod for the Radeon 8500...
instead of going in with a pencil, which is highly inaccurate, try connecting two variable resistors in parallel with the resistors present onboard. At R=infinity you should be getting stock voltage, and as you decrease R, voltage should start to steadily rise (two resistors in parallel)..

Thanks for the info damn1....

I'm still looking for tools from ATI and NVidia that will show voltages and frequencies, and allow for voltage mods, a-la Abit. Frequency control is a nice start, but i want more ! :)

but what is the safe ohmage to use for those resistors?? or do we just go for the standard 50k variables used on mobos?

and which ati drivers are the fastest cos I can't work it out...! I get bizarre results no matter what I use...

Good question Marci,

I will be doing a install of 2K this weekend and maybe I'll do some testing to evaluate which drivers are the fastest for 3DMark2001SE. Will post back results in this forum. Also my aim will be to hit 11000 3DMARKS which at the moment I am only getting 10701 Marks with a tweaked WinXP. I hope Win2K will give me a few hundred marks to close the gap.

Hope MrIcee is right!!!

Rage3D is probably the best source for all your ATI questions... All i know is that Catalyst 2.1 is mighty fast.

Paul K, i hear WinXP really sux for a lot of things, including benchmarking. Opt for Win2K

Well, an insight for you... using instructions from Macci, MajorMav & Icee, I installed Win2k/SP2 today... I managed to equal my highest score achieved with the epox (10407) with the kx7-333r, but rather than at 1803mhz, did it at 1666. 166x10. I now have all ram timings up full tilt, including 1t command, and ultra cpu decode. Next step is push the radeon gpu harder and slowly up the cpu. If I can get 10400 just with timings and running a 300/300 clock on the rad, then I can see a lot of scope for improvement on my score... Win2K and KX7 are beginning to rock... all be it gently....

I get most of my stuff from rage3d, and yes, I am beginning to think the new catalyst drivers are the fastest yet...

still haven't had chance to wind this new cpu up yet... previous was an agoia y 0205... current, see sig. Hoping it will go high...

Yes I have heard this from a number of sources, I hope I'll reach the 11000 mark I'll be one happy camper.
