I always hear about this. Is it good or bad? If it's bad, how can you avoid it?

the core is in the middle

so as long as the whole IHS is flat , don't worry about those corners

if it has rounded corners than it isn't flat. so yes it is a bad thing.

Agreed but you're losing so little surface it really doesnt matter as far as cooling is concerned

Considering an MCW60 doesn't touch nearly all of the G80 IHS, and it still performs so well, I'm gonna go out a limb and say that the rounded corners mean....not a lot ;)

Obviously, full performance comes with full contact, but if the difference is <1% (in temperture....clocks difference will be 0 or 1 FSB step off) and lapping down that much takes a few extra hours, why do it?

rounded corners after lapping means you have created a convex surface on the IHS.

as such only a portion of the center may touch depending on how you much you may have rounded the IHS.

Use glass and some TIM to measure.
