i dont know too much about what chipsets for amd. a buddy of mine asked me an upgrade question. he just bought an agp videocard and ddr1 ram. he wants to go dualcore, but im not sure what mobo's support dualcore and agp.

all of the nf3 chipset based mobo's i have seen, said nothing about x2/opteron support.

any info or recommendations would be greatly appretiated.

what sort of level of quality does the board need to be? like will he be overclocking it and if so, how much?

I like the DFI NF3 LP ULTRA-D. It comes with AGP slot. ;)

You can go socket 939.

Cpus in socket 939 which are dual core ranges from
X2: 3800+ ~ 4800+
FX: 60
Opteron: 165 ~ 185

You can probably find a s939 motherboard with AGP support,
which will be hard to find these days, but exist.

On the other hand, if he thinks about going socket AM2, he can't.
AM2 socket uses DDR2 and PCI-e.

Anyways, to be more specific,
most if not all Nforce3 and nForce4 boards are supposedly X2 capable,
but don't worry, boards have been found to work with X2 as long
as they're socket 939.
On the other hand, performance I cannot guarantee ;)

that was the problem. he had purchased the videocard like 2 weeks ago and put it in his current setup. he doesnt feel right about taking it back after he used it, so i was going to find him a solid dualcore setup for the least amount of cash.

thanks all for the help :toast:

Try to find one of these used. DFI NF3 Ultra D. MSI K8N Neo 2.
Be sure to find out about D/C support before purchase but I think they both will.

Yes the DFI NF3 does support the x2's. I am currently waiting to get my 165 opty. The only thing is finding one of these boards, they are very hard to come by.

The GAK8NS is another great board and supports OCZ's DDR booster past 3.5V, The dual BIOS is cool. The K8T800's have a problem with AGP/PCI locks past 250HT and limited DDR voltage, even though they're great boards, mmmm AV8. And Abits UL8 doesnt have a working AGP/PCI lock at all  .

If you can take it back, do it, it's your right as a consumer. Keeping the customer happy should be in the best intrest of a computer supplier.

I couldn't even make it to 205HT... The BIOS is full of great OC'ing options, but at no point.

only chipset which has problems with dual core is VIA K8T 890 (ok this one is PCIe, and as far as i know K8T800 runs without problems)

you can buy any 939 AGP mobo out there and it will work with dual-core, if you need best OC go with dfi nf3, if not grab an msi, biostar, gigabyte or epox

This has to be the best mobo out there for flexibility. It has both AGP and PCI-E X16 and support for single and duel core A64s. There a nice moded BIOS out there for it that alows good OCing passed 300HTT for it and a price under $68.
