The last time I used that header it was about Frisch and Levi in Rosetta!:D
This time it's a whole new ballgame and it's starting to heat up!
In one corner, we have "The Machine" Cold,Black and deadly.
In the other corner, 2 nice guys from The US and Holland.(and a unanounced guest with his 2400 baud modem)
How will this play out!
Will one steamroller the other? Will it be close?
Stay tuned boys and girls. This one looks to be a goodie.

How comes PY222 does so well with just a 13mb connection ?That is a very, very good question.....his 340000MB downloaded on CO-202 today (even if all 24 hours of today have passed--they haven't) means he'd need a 33mb connection on that system alone....hmmmmm.....something fishy.....

Do you guys know how many systems he has one this. Figure at least 1 per mil (which would be ~ 25). Also, the place where he has this probably has a T3 line. CO-202 is probably an area where he has some computers under this project.

Yes that would be a good test , as MJ 12 seems quite good at reporting line speeds.

I still have a feeling that this program can be tweaked up quite a bit. I know Haltech got it really rocking.

Right been on Free-dc they have spotted us

http://www.free-dc.org/forum/showthread.php?p=108125#post108125

Seems that there are some tweaks to try I cant do them as I cant maxout my pipe due to others using it and Im on 2003 for my main client.

http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=tools
Under Tools->Crawler:

After you've done that then I would set your max async workers to 125 (for using 6mbps, if you wish to go higher then do 200 for up to about 8.5mbps usage). Set max open buckets to 65. Set delay before crawling to 1. Set pre-cached buckets to 25. Use fixed upload chunk of 64kb. Use persistent connection. No delays between upload chunks. Wait between barrel uploads 2 seconds. Stop if uploads greater than 200.

Now, to get MJ-12 to work well with other DC projects but not really ever utilize more than 3-5% of CPU cycles I have the following for you...

Under Tools->Misc:

CPU Priorities: Set all to Below Normal except Upload thread which should be set to Normal priority. Normally for DC projects this kind of process affinity would be a very bad thing but this project focuses more on bandwidth instead of CPU usage. Giving it these priorities will allow it to "get a word in edgewise" when trying to act properly. You should see very minimal impact on your main DC project. Also check the box that says "Clear log file on start".

Under Tools->Archiving:

Check the "Run archiving in a seperate process space". Process priority "below normal". Archiving delay 3. LZMA compression enabled. Word size 24 bytes. Dictionary size 4mb. DO NOT enable external archiver.

Archiving for me using OGR-25 takes about 2mins per bucket. With no other program running it takes like 45 seconds but this is acceptable wait time to allow another DC project to take precedence, once again with very little impact.

Once you've done all this then click OK and then just File->Restart so that way all the changes you've made will take effect.

Edi: From what I remember Haltech saying winrar is the best bet for archiving, thats what Im using.

Lets ramp it up ppl !!!

Considering how many results got buffered from the network issues, 50Mil may not be out of reach for tomorrow.....wouldn't be legit though :(

I'm still having upload problems....the client isn't thinking of uploading as an urgent process (isn't retrying after a failed attempt, of which there are many).....and it's getting barrels done and archived faster than it uploads.....each main system has 150+ barrels to upload and climbing.

Uploading process is on HIGH, with all delays at the minimum. Compression is MAXXED out as well, so file size is as small as it can go....ugh.

I'll say it: the word :toast: Heck, if you know some Irish, they are welcome too!!

To Vapor: I'm having same problem. I'm sometimes 75 barrels behind in upload. Only way I can seem to fix that is to stop downing for a half hour and manually press the node to upload. Don't think it hase to do with Alexc his work on the server or something. I have this problem all the time. Strange thing is, I only have this problem with one of my machines. The other one uploads fine it 90% of time. Really should be no difference, since both are on the same connection..

Regarding the nudity: yes please :D

There are a lot of tweaks you can make to the client. Some of them just take a while to figure out. Some of the delay ones (robot txt, url flush) can also depend on your computer. When I get around to it, I'll write a guide on how to tweak the MJ12 client. Also, TWB, if your computer is slow (i.e. slow P4 or slower) rar is better than LZMA. If your computer is a fast P4 (3ghz +) than LZMA is the right way to go, but the settings should be at least 8mb dictionary size and 64 word size. Also, another very important tweak: Upload chunk benchmark. One day, run this but set the size to 2mb instead of 1 and if you can, run it at 1 intervals instead of 4. It took a whole day for it to finish, but came out with 60kb being the best size to upload on my line. Also, don’t stop crawling during it since when your client is uploading, your client doesn’t stop crawling.

The funniest thing of all of this is that after I tweaked my machine using the instructions given in the Free Dc post, my machine is crunching like a whore with an itch...LOL LOL LOL . It used to be that Diablo needed 1 day to crunch 100 buckets...now in less than 16 hours is close to 320 crunched. 60 buckets in cache, at least 120 workers working at about 15-20 buckets working all the time.. I am going to see if I can add extra bandwidth. (My ISP during Xmas season allows for nice upgrading for very little money , lets see what special offer they come with )

PS If I post a picture of a neiked female, will I be banned?

Unless you have a good reason, please update to the current MJ12node v1.3.5 BETA 3.1 (.NET 2.0) ASAP
For Wes on one machine that's Monday? :D
Otherwise please use it since it appears to run somewhat better & faster than the older version.

That may help give us an edge over PY for the current battle.

UPLOAD all barrels, then migrate buckets back.
THEN extract stuff into the dir. This way if anything screwy happens you loose minimal stuff.

It definitely has a lower success rate, but it searches the internet faster, that it why it has a lower success rate. Do a test: run the MJ12 library and the .net library for one hour each:
The MJ12 library will have ~100k URL completed, with only 50% success, equaling 50k success
The .net library will have ~60k URL completed, with an 83% success, equaling 50k also.
See, it’s not that it errors more, just that it searches more websites and finds more that are bad.

movieman or someone from XS please do me a BIG favor! That admins over at your team have yet to approve my account creation so I can't reply to what moddolicious has said but it needs said so plz post the following over there to him from me:

Mod, do NOT use the MJ-12 library. Yes it does crawl more URLs than the .NET one but alex has said to discontinue use of the MJ-12 library unless you're using the Mono version of MJ-12 (non-Windows). The library itself is very buggy and is producing poor success rates. We're looking for quality of crawled URLs and not quantity really so that 83% success w/ .NET versus the ~50% success with MJ-12 is a very large difference. It should be noted that no one with Windows should use the MJ-12 library until Alex gets it fixed up and released way later on (probably after January). The MJ-12 library is not searching faster and finding more bad, it's that the library itself is bad and isn't doing what it's supposed to do!

-Jeff

P.S. Thanks in advance Movieman or anyone from XS that may get this over there! And ask an admin over there to approve me plz! :-D

I remember a string of posts about this which supported the above point.

Also from my experience, I would get about 2kurls/min either way but 75% .NET vs 50% Alexhttp so...

and its super-beta, so it actually does error more too. mnay of those TOed sites may not have TOed under .NET, so its very difficult to say. My suggestion is just go by how much data you're uploading... i know there are quite a few nodes with 1.5-2M urls already today but with <10gigs of data, which is concerning. if your numbers look like these:
3,289,476
(13,200)

Something is very, very wrong. 13 gigs should only be getting around 1-1.25Murls, not 3.3M, meaning there is a lot of bad data being returned on some buckets there.

EDIT: in response to Mad mikee: I plan on continuing use of alexc's library, as its success rate for me (65%) is pretty much spot on (well, maybe a bit lower) with what .NET has been doing for me as of late.

Woah! It looks like I decided to move on the wrong weekend. Crapcast just reconnected my line and I'm back in the game, computer spent the first hour uploading and downloading work for WCG. Time to bring some pain and help out XSTM. M&M I really like the user names, borg blaster *laff* Best of luck but the collective is assimilating more machines, if you can't stop us, join us. BTW I'm glad XSTM is currently based out of American Samoa as it is a breezy 77F outside :)

All jests aside, I decided to limit MJ12 to 90% of the connection during the evening and 100% for the rest of the day, I figure my roommate deserves atleast 10% of the line.

@gomeler

Be careful with Comcast. I used 1.3TBs of data a few months ago (before I moved) and they called and warned me to stop using so much or I'd be cut off. :nono: They wouldn't tell me what the limit was but they claimed that I used 645GBs of bandwidth and that was about 3 times the normal user's monthly usage. So I estimated the monthly usage to be about 200GBs/mo. Problem is is that Comcast usually starts a bill mid-month so you have to be very careful. They also said some areas they service allow for more bandwidth usage while others allow for less but he said my area (Indianapolis) was one of the higher ones.

That is why I downgraded from 8mbps to the regular 6mbps connection with them. They ended up cutting my connection and said I used too much bandwidth (over 300GBs in one month) and now I can't have their service again until August 2007.

Insight -seems- to not care as much really but they are about to upgrade to a 10mbps/1mbps connection so I bet that they start caring more when I start pumping out 1.5-1.8TBs/mo of bandwidth and they're paying more for me to have the internet than they are getting from me. :woot:

From what I've heard and seen mostly though most DSL providers do not care about what you use so if Comcast starts threatening then try and find a 4-6mbps DSL provider (if you don't have a phone line at home then look for naked DSL) and they shouldn't ever complain. :toast:

You want a day to remember: Take a close friend out for a day fishing on a good lake, pick a day thats between 60-80F, bring a cooler with a lunch and ice water and it's a day you'll remember always.
True friends are a rare thing in this life and should be cherished.
Trust me, take that day and you will both remember it .
