Help me get more than 280MHz HTT *EDIT* figured out :)

After I figured out what to do with my temps I had on my opty 165 - solution: remove IHS :D - I have started clocking this chip. Here is what I have:

Asus A8R32-MVP (ATI RD580), latest BIOS
Opty 165 CCBBE 0617FPMW (no IHS) @ 280x9 1.325v BIOS, 1.36v actual
2GB kit (2x1GB) G.Skill PC3200 2.5-3-3-6 1T

Currently I have the memory with a 133 divider to keep it out of the overclocking equation so it is running at 180MHz right now. I know it is good up to 210MHz but it doesn't seem too good for overclocking but I don't know a whole lot about RAM stuff.

Now my problem:

With HTT set to 280MHz it boots right up, runs orthos for several hours, no problem. But if I try 285MHz it won't POST. So I tried this stuff:
Bumping up the voltage on the CPU, no go.
Increasing the chipset core voltage from 1.2V to 1.3V, no help.
Increasing HT voltage a little, still nothing.
Decreased the HT multi from 5X to 4X to 3X, still nothing.

All the voltages are back to 1.2V on the PCIe, HT, and chipset core.

I am pretty certain I am not at the max of this CPU since upping the voltage doesn't help at all. I suppose I could be at the max of this board, but there have been people who have gotten 300+ HTT on the same board.

Any ideas?

Try bypassing 285 Htt and go right up to 290 or 295. When I was ocing my opty I was going up in small steps using clockgen and it would throw an error every time at 275 Htt. I said screw it and went right to 290, posted no problem. I wasn't worried about my board being maxed becuase I knew Dfi are always good for 300+. good luck

raise MAL(max asynch latency), it has always helped me get higher htt when using divider.

hmmm your htlink speed is already 1100+mhz. It is recommended to keep this at 1000 or less isn't it?

The RD580 chipset though is good for up to about 1500MHz unlike most others. However I did try reducing it and it didn't help any so I don't think that is the issue.

Alright, I'm running orthos @ 290HTT now :woot:

I tried bypassing the 280's, no go, raised the MAL from 7 to 10, and it sorta wanted to POST but not quite. Bumped the vcore on the CPU up slightly and it POSTed but then it would bluescreen. Played with the memory divider and set it to 100 instead of 133 and it POSTed and booted up. Dropped the vcore on the CPU back down and it booted again. But now my RAM is running at only 145MHz, surely there is a way to get it back around 200MHz... Hmm...

Also coretemp is showing 53 degrees C on core 1, after I was having trouble keeping it under 56+ at stock until I took the IHS off it doesn't seem so bad but I still wonder how warm is OK.

*EDIT* Do I need some sort of extra cooling on the power regulators or something? I noticed my vcore is now bouncing around under load from 1.344 to 1.36 and idle anywhere between 1.35 and almost 1.4, not exactly the most stable...

The HT Link multi should be at 3X or else you will corrupt your HDD + mem + dog...

yeah... i hav seen grayskull posting 1.6GHz HT link speed...

i only managed to hit 1486MHz for now... still tweaking the ht link speed... grrr :slap:

it is related to chipset capability... RD580 got the potential to clock up the HT link speed... they said 1500MHz stable... :fact:

It is the chipset. Nvidia's can't go much more than the normal 1000 HT without problems. ATI designed the RD580 chipset to go to about 1500 HT (don't try it on the older RD480 though)

When you think about it, it would be ridiculous, say you have an AM2 mobo and some DDR2 capable of 10GB/s bandwidth, but HTT locked no more than say 1100. Then you'd have the HTT at probably around 8GB/s, 2GB/s less than the actual memory. That would be quite bad. On the other hand, since my HTT is about at 8GB/s I need to get my DDR1 ram up to that level. I'm looking at a pair of OCZ Platinum PC3200 2-3-2-5 OCZ rated, that I'd swap from my current Kingston KVR + a premium :p (from 6GB/s mem to 7+ GB/s :woot: ).

Anyway, for your memory, I'd suggest changing the CPU multi to lower, and increase the bus to say 335 - 340 or so. Depends, I got mine at 330+ and the multi at 8.5 for 2.8ghz, and the HTT link is at 3x for 1000 even (or close).

I'd try all sorts of combos.
